About The Role
The Service Technician 2 is an experienced technician responsible for independently inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, testing, and maintaining refuse collection vehicles and related equipment.
The Technician 2 is expected to have a strong working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and refuse-body systems and be capable of completing routine and moderately complex repairs with limited supervision.
Equipment serviced may include, but is not limited to, different manufactures aside from AMREP, and other refuse collection bodies and associated chassis equipment.
Service Technician 2 - Hourly Range: $31.50 - $39.50 (based on experience)
Essential Responsibilities
Mechanical Systems
- Diagnose and repair mechanical systems on refuse collection vehicles and related equipment.
- Perform component removal, replacement, adjustment, and installation.
- Repair and maintain chassis-related components.
- Perform repairs involving steering, suspension, drivetrain, PTO, brakes, and related mechanical systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections and identify potential equipment failures.
- Determine whether components should be repaired, adjusted, or replaced.
- Conduct operational testing following repairs.
- Assist with complex repairs beyond the Technician 2's level of authorization or expertise.
Hydraulic Systems
- Diagnose hydraulic system failures and determine root cause.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic cylinders, pumps, valves, motors, hoses, fittings, and related components.
- Identify hydraulic leaks and determine appropriate corrective action.
- Properly install and test hydraulic components.
- Understand basic hydraulic schematics and system operation.
- Troubleshoot hydraulic pressure, flow, and operational problems.
- Perform hydraulic repairs while following proper contamination-control and safety procedures.
Electrical Systems
- Diagnose electrical problems using appropriate testing equipment.
- Utilize a digital multimeter and other diagnostic equipment.
- Troubleshoot wiring, switches, sensors, relays, solenoids, lights, controls, and electrical circuits.
- Read and interpret basic electrical schematics.
- Diagnose electrical problems before replacing components.
- Repair wiring and electrical connections when appropriate.
- Properly test equipment following electrical repairs.
Refuse Body Systems
- Diagnose and repair refuse-body systems.
- Service and repair compaction systems, hydraulic systems, controls, interlocks, sensors, and related components.
- Diagnose problems involving packer, ejector, tailgate, hopper, arms, doors, and related refuse-body components.
- Understand the operating sequence of refuse collection equipment.
- Perform functional testing after repairs.
- Identify safety-related deficiencies and communicate them to management.
Welding and Fabrication
- Perform basic to intermediate welding and fabrication within demonstrated qualifications.
- Repair or modify brackets, supports, guards, mounts, and other components when authorized.
- Perform cutting, grinding, drilling, and preparation of materials.
- Determine when a repair requires a qualified welder or fabrication specialist.
Responsibilities include
- Evaluate customer complaints and equipment symptoms.
- Perform systematic troubleshooting.
- Use service manuals, technical information, schematics, and diagnostic equipment.
- Determine required parts and repairs.
- Identify additional problems discovered during inspection.
- Communicate diagnostic findings to the Service Manager.
- Recommend appropriate corrective action.
- Verify repairs before returning equipment to service.
Work Orders and Documentation
- Accurately document diagnosis, repairs, labor, parts, and materials.
- Maintain complete and accurate work-order information.
- Document additional repairs or safety concerns.
- Provide clear notes explaining the cause of failure and corrective action.
- Communicate parts requirements to the Service Manager or Parts Department.
- Complete work orders within established company expectations.
- Notify management when delays, additional repairs, or parts issues may affect completion dates.
Service Center Operations/ Safety Responsibilities
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Properly use company-provided tools, equipment, and PPE.
- Assist with staging vehicles and equipment for repair.
- Assist with receiving and returning parts.
- Maintain proper control and care of company tools and equipment.
- Properly dispose of waste materials and hazardous materials in accordance with company procedures.
- Assist with final cleanup and preparation of equipment for customer delivery.
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
- Follow applicable OSHA and Cal/OSHA requirements.
- Follow proper lockout/tagout procedures when applicable.
- Properly secure vehicles and equipment before beginning work.
- Report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, and safety concerns immediately.
- Stop work and request assistance when a repair exceeds the employee's training or authorization.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, technical training, or equivalent experience preferred.
- 2–4 years of relevant mechanical, heavy-duty truck, equipment, hydraulic, electrical, or refuse-equipment experience, depending on demonstrated competency.
- Experience working on heavy-duty trucks or industrial equipment preferred.
- Refuse-industry experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose equipment independently.
- Ability to read service manuals, technical documentation, and basic schematics.
- Ability to use diagnostic tools and a digital multimeter.
- Basic welding/fabrication capability preferred.
- Valid driver's license required based on company policy and job responsibilities.
- CDL may be preferred depending on assigned duties.
Physical Requirements
- Standing and walking for extended periods.
- Bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and working in confined or awkward positions.
- Working underneath and around heavy-duty equipment.
- Handling tools, components, hoses, and parts within established company limits.
- Working around noise, grease, oil, hydraulic fluid, dirt, dust, and other industrial materials.
- Wearing required PPE.
Technician 2 Performance Expectations
A Service Technician 2 is expected to
- Work independently on routine and moderately complex repairs.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical problems.
- Determine the root cause of equipment failures.
- Complete repairs correctly the first time whenever reasonably possible.
- Maintain consistent productivity and quality.
- Minimize unnecessary parts replacement.
- Properly document all work performed.
- Communicate repair status and additional requirements to management.
- Follow all safety procedures.
- Properly use and care for company-provided tools and equipment.
- Assist and provide technical guidance to Technician 1 employees.
- Recognize when a repair requires additional technical support or management authorization.
