R&D Engineer Metallurgist – Structure & Surface

We are seeking a talented and ambitious R&D Engineer Metallurgist to join our team at Aperam Alloys Imphy Pierre Chevenard Research Center. In this role, you will play a crucial part in developing new alloys, and technologies aligned with our strategic goals. Your expertise will be instrumental in providing metallurgical support and applications development for existing grades, ensuring the continuous improvement of our products. Additionally, you will define and implement characterization processes for nickel-based alloys, communicating their unique value, properties, and potential applications to our marketing team.

Responsibilities:

• Provide technical support and maintain relationships with our plant and internal teams, ensuring a deep understanding of metallurgical processes and their impact on structure, defects, and surface characterization.
• Offer metallurgical expertise and support to our customers, ensuring their satisfaction and success.
• Lead and manage the Structure & Characterization department within our Research Center, overseeing a team of technicians and utilizing advanced characterization tools.
• Ensure the safety, security, and quality of your team and equipment, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and skill development.
• Develop and enhance our Ni-based Alloys competency, building upon our existing knowledge of FeNi, Duplex Stainless Steel, and other alloys, and exploring their usage values, properties, and applications.
• Understand and propose improvements for phase transformations and structures characterization, contributing to the optimization of our manufacturing processes.
• Drive the development of new products, staying abreast of breakthrough technologies and metallurgical advancements, and actively participating in the filing of patents.
• Manage and contribute to our R&D projects portfolio, serving as a key point of contact for metallurgical expertise at the Imphy site.
• Foster a collaborative and innovative environment, ensuring effective communication and teamwork between R&D, Industrial Operations, Quality, and Development teams.
• Engage with academic networks and partners, ensuring our Research Center remains at the forefront of metallurgical research and development.

Qualifications:

• A solid foundation in Metallurgy or Materials Science, with a PhD or Master's degree from a top-tier French engineering school.
• Extensive knowledge and experience in Metallography and metallurgical characterizations, with a proven track record in managing and leading teams.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.
• Proficiency in project management, with the ability to steer external and transversal projects, ensuring timely delivery and successful outcomes.
• A passion for innovation and idea sourcing, with an open mind and a willingness to explore new technologies and approaches.
• Fluency in English and French is mandatory, with the ability to communicate effectively with international teams and customers.
• Experience in R&D within the metallurgical field is highly advantageous, demonstrating a deep understanding of the industry and its challenges.
• Strong knowledge of physics, phase transformations, and thermodynamics, with the ability to apply these principles to material characterizations.
• Practical experience with experimental laboratory techniques, characterization tools, and metallography, ensuring a hands-on approach to research.
• A results-oriented mindset, with a track record of delivering high-quality work and a commitment to continuous improvement and learning.
