Commissioning Technician - HVAC

Kent is looking for HVAC Commissioning Technicians to support the Kearl In-Pit Tailings Area 2 (ITA2) Project. The technician will execute field HVAC pre-commissioning and commissioning activities, test and balance equipment and systems, troubleshoot performance issues, and complete the documentation required for safe turnover to Operations. The role works closely with commissioning leadership, Construction, Systems Completion, Operations, Engineering, controls specialists, vendors, and other disciplines.

Responsibilities

Commissioning Execution and Field Support

• Execute HVAC pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up, functional testing, and performance verification in accordance with approved procedures, work packs, drawings, and schedules.
• Inspect and test HVAC systems and equipment, including air-handling units, make-up air units, exhaust and supply fans, ductwork, dampers, filters, heating and cooling coils, unit heaters, refrigeration equipment, ventilation controls, and associated packages.
• Support equipment start-up; verify rotation, airflow, temperatures, pressures, vibration, safeties, alarms, interlocks, freeze protection, and operating sequences.
• Perform or support air and hydronic balancing activities, record readings, compare results with design criteria, and assist with corrective adjustments.
• Verify interfaces with building automation, fire and gas, electrical, instrumentation, and process systems, including shutdown and emergency ventilation functions where applicable.
• Assist with troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, controls, airflow, refrigeration, and equipment-performance issues; escalate complex or safety-critical conditions.
• Coordinate with commissioning, construction, operations, engineering, QA/QC, controls specialists, vendors, and other disciplines to remove constraints and maintain safe work fronts.

Systems Completion and Documentation

• Complete HVAC commissioning check sheets, start-up records, test and balance reports, deficiency reports, redlines, and turnover documentation using SCDB or an equivalent system.
• Verify installation completeness and readiness against HVAC drawings, control schematics, equipment schedules, data sheets, vendor manuals, and approved acceptance criteria.
• Identify, record, and support closure of punch list items, deficiencies, and non-conformances required for system turnover.
• Maintain calibrated test equipment and accurate, traceable records of readings, settings, tests, and completed work.

Safe Work and Quality

• Comply with permit-to-work, lockout/tagout, isolation, refrigerant handling, electrical safety, working-at-height, confined-space, and Safety-in-Transition requirements as applicable.
• Participate in toolbox talks, field-level risk assessments, pre-job meetings, and safe work observations; stop work when conditions are unsafe or outside the approved scope.
• Perform work in accordance with applicable codes, client requirements, project specifications, vendor instructions, commissioning procedures, and quality standards.
• Communicate shift progress, constraints, outstanding deficiencies, and safety concerns clearly to the supervisor and incoming crew.

These tasks will be within the reasonable scope of the employee's skills, capabilities, and role within the organization. Your knowledge/skills, education, and experience

Knowledge/ Qualification/ Training/ Certification

• Journeyperson Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic, Sheet Metal Worker, or another relevant HVAC trade qualification recognized in Alberta; Interprovincial Red Seal endorsement is preferred.
• Previous HVAC commissioning, start-up, service, maintenance, or construction experience on oil sands, oil and gas, mining, commercial, or large industrial projects.
• Working knowledge of HVAC drawings, control schematics, equipment schedules, vendor manuals, test and balance methods, and commissioning documentation.
• Practical experience using HVAC test instruments and diagnosing airflow, heating, cooling, refrigeration, controls, and equipment-performance issues.
• Experience with building automation systems, industrial ventilation, systems completion databases such as SCDB, and test and balance certification is an asset.
• Appropriate refrigerant handling certification is required where the assigned work involves regulated refrigerants.
• Valid driver’s licence and ability to satisfy project access, fitness-for-work, and client onboarding requirements.

Communication

• Excellent command of the English language, with clear oral and written communication skills.
• Able to prepare accurate field records, shift handovers, deficiency descriptions, and commissionin
