Summary/Job Purpose

The Junior Underwriter is responsible for underwriting and servicing Excess Casualty business on a nationwide basis in accordance with Corporate goals and objectives.

Essential Functions

  • Underwrites and services Excess Casualty risks within underwriting authority. Monitors underwriting results, premium and loss trends within assigned book of business.
  • Reviewing submissions to determine acceptability of risk in accordance with Company guidelines and standards.
  • Perform all aspects of the underwriting process and due diligence including review and analysis of financial documents and individual risk factors.
  • Applying appropriate pricing techniques according to company filings and state/bureau conformance.
  • Working with brokers and clients to create customized insurance solutions.
  • Documents accounts in accordance with regulatory and internal underwriting guidelines.
  • Analyzes Policy forms and endorsement requests from brokers.
  • Assists in establishing and executing effective and efficient broker and client visits (with appropriate business units – Risk Engineering, Claims and Marketing Representatives) in order to maintain existing, and increase new, business.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required

  • High school degree (or GED) required. Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 1-2 years insurance experience is preferred, including 2+ years in an Underwriting Assistant / Associate role is preferred or applicable industry experience.
  • Knowledge of underwriting and rating principles, guides, policy forms, rating manuals and statutory regulations is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective negotiation skills
  • Good organization skills

Excellent Organizational and computer skills

20% travel.


Salary: The base pay range is $790,000.00 - 105,000.00 . Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
