Superintendent - Assurance

Role Purpose The role is responsible for strengthening the Company’s independent assurance and learning framework by conducting office / vessel audits, leading incident investigations and mentoring shipboard teams to improve operational safety and compliance. The role acts as a development pathway for future Marine, Technical or QHSE Superintendents. Key Responsibilities 1. Internal Audits Conduct vessel audits in accordance with company procedures, regulatory requirements, and applicable industry standards. Identify and document deviations, non-conformities, and improvement opportunities during audits and operational reviews. Deliver onboard training, mentoring, and coaching to address gaps identified during audits, particularly those arising from lack of understanding, skills, or knowledge of procedures. Perform structured root cause analysis of deficiencies, incidents, and recurring operational issues. Develop and document appropriate corrective and preventive actions (CAPA). Follow up and verify the effective implementation of corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence. Support improvement of operational compliance, safety culture, and overall effectiveness of the Company’s Safety Management System across the fleet. 2. Incident Investigation Attend vessels and lead or support incident / accident investigations as directed. Secure and review VDR, relevant evidence including statements, records, operational data, and supporting documentation. Conduct structured root cause analysis to identify immediate, underlying, and systemic causes of the incident. Evaluate contributing human, operational, technical, and organisational factors. Document investigation findings in a clear, evidence-based report. Develop and recommend appropriate corrective and preventive actions to address identified causes and reduce the risk of recurrence. Follow up on implementation of agreed actions and verify their effectiveness. Capture and disseminate lessons learned to vessels and shore teams to strengthen operational learning and safety culture across the fleet. 3. SMS Implementation Verification / Coaching Verify onboard and office implementation of the Company’s Safety Management System (SMS) during vessel and office attendance. Review the application of key operational processes including risk assessment, permit to work, planned maintenance, work planning, and safety reporting. Observe routine operations and assess whether procedures are understood and correctly applied by shipboard personnel. Provide coaching and practical guidance to officers and crew to strengthen understanding and effective implementation of SMS requirements. Identify gaps between documented procedures and actual practices and highlight improvement opportunities. Support vessels in strengthening compliance with company procedures, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. 4. Vessel / Office Preparation for Inspections Conduct detailed readiness reviews of vessels and office units to assess preparedness for regulatory and commercial inspections. Verify compliance with applicable requirements related to Port State Control (PSC), Flag State, Class, RightShip, and DBMS assessments. Perform focused verification of documentation, operational practices, records, and management system implementation relevant to inspections. Identify gaps, deficiencies, or areas of vulnerability that may impact inspection outcomes. Provide practical guidance to vessel and office teams to address identified gaps and strengthen readiness. Support units in implementing corrective actions to ensure sustained compliance and improved inspection performance. 5. Office Support Provide subject matter expertise for dry vessel operations, including Bulk Carriers, Container Vessels, and Car/Truck Carriers. Support the review and continual improvement of the Company’s Safety Management System (SMS) based on findings from audits, incident investigations, and operational feedback. Contribute industry best practices and operational insights to strengthen procedures, guidance notes, and management system effectiveness. Assist office teams in analysing trends, lessons learned, and systemic risks identified from fleet operations. Support the development of practical improvements to policies, procedures, and operational controls. Undertake other related tasks and assignments as directed by the Company to support safety, compliance, and operational performance. Minimum Qualification Requirements One of the following: Master Mariner (FG) – Class I CoC Chief Engineer (FG) – Class I CoC Chief Officer / Second Engineer with potential for command. Experience Minimum 24 months sailing experience in senior rank Experience in ship management or safety functions preferred Vessel Type Experience: Bulk Carriers, General Cargo Vessels, Container Carriers Skills Technical Maritime regulations knowledge Auditing techniques Incident investigation Risk analysis Behavioral Strong analytical ability High integrity Leadership and mentoring skills Strong report writing ability Travel Requirement Approximately 50–70% global travel to vessels. Key Performance Indicators Reduction in repeat incidents and deficiencies across the fleet, demonstrating that audit findings and investigation learnings are effectively preventing recurrence. Timely and effective closure of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) , including verification that implemented actions address root causes and deliver sustainable improvement. Quality and timeliness of incident investigations , ensuring thorough root cause analysis and clear identification of contributing operational, technical, and human factors. Improvement in external inspection outcomes , including reduction in deficiencies during PSC, Flag, Class, RightShip, or DBMS assessments. Effective dissemination and implementation of lessons learned across the fleet , strengthening organizational learning, safety culture, and consistent operational practices.
