Investment Analyst – Trust Finance

Position Summary

The Investment Analyst supports the oversight and administration of Southern Company's investment programs. The role works across multiple asset pools, including defined benefit, defined contribution, corporate foundations, nuclear decommissioning trusts (NDTs), VEBAs, and other post-employment benefit plans.

The successful candidate will develop a broad understanding of institutional investing while serving as a key contributor to portfolio oversight, performance reporting, investment decision support, and strategic project work. The position is designed for individuals interested in developing a long-term career in institutional investing and successful candidates will have opportunities to expand responsibilities in manager due diligence, portfolio construction, asset allocation, and investment strategy development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead preparation of recurring investment reports and performance materials
  • Maintain investment performance records, benchmark information, and portfolio analytics
  • Build productive working relationships and serve as liaison with internal business partners, custodians, consultants, investment managers, and service providers
  • Support investment manager due diligence efforts and assist with manager searches, requests for information, due diligence questionnaires, and investment research projects
  • Manage onboarding of new investment manager relationships and provide support on account opening documentation (investment manager agreements, investment guidelines, subscription documents)
  • Maintain ownership of assigned investment operations processes, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and strong internal controls
  • Manage liquidity planning, cash movements, and portfolio rebalancing activities across various asset pools (pension, foundation, VEBAs, and NDT)
  • Support quarterly fair value reporting and other financial reporting requirements
  • Ensure investment documentation and proper adherence to record retention requirements
  • Monitor investment guideline compliance and coordinate investigation and resolution of potential violations
  • Support and execute SOX controls and other governance requirements associated with investment operations
  • Demonstrate ownership, accountability, and initiative in driving projects from inception through completion

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field required
  • 2-5 years of experience in institutional investments, investment consulting, asset management, finance, accounting, or treasury required
  • Experience with performance reporting, investment operations, portfolio analytics, manager research desired
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development, including pursuit of the CFA charter or a similar designation, viewed favorably

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Strong interest in capital markets, investment manager evaluation, and institutional investing
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and project management capabilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and AI-enabled productivity tools
  • Intellectual curiosity and desire for continuous learning
  • Demonstrated initiative, ownership mindset, and ability to work independently
