Job Description

The Mechanical Designer is responsible for designing, modifying, and documenting mechanical equipment, machine components, and systems to support new product development, customer-specific applications, and modernization of existing equipment. Working closely with Mechanical Engineers and cross-functional teams, this role utilizes CAD software to create detailed models, drawings, and bills of materials while ensuring designs meet engineering, manufacturing, quality, and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design new machinery, equipment, systems, and component modifications based on engineering specifications and customer requirements.
  • Create moderately complex 3D models, layouts, assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings using CAD software.
  • Evaluate designs to ensure proper fit, function, manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and serviceability.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineers to verify engineering calculations related to materials, stresses, clearances, tolerances, and machine performance.
  • Develop and maintain bills of materials (BOMs), assembly drawings, detail drawings, pneumatic schematics, and related technical documentation.
  • Review and implement engineering change requests while maintaining design accuracy and project schedules.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical recommendations for product improvements.
  • Support manufacturing, procurement, and assembly teams by resolving design-related issues and answering technical questions.
  • Interface with suppliers regarding technical requirements and component selection.
  • Assist with equipment testing, trial runs, and prototype validation.
  • Travel to customer facilities, as needed, to provide installation support, troubleshoot equipment, and identify opportunities for product or process improvements.
  • Assist in developing and improving design standards, templates, and standard work procedures.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of mechanical design principles, drafting standards, and engineering documentation.
  • Experience creating precision technical drawings, blueprints, and 3D models.
  • Understanding of engineering principles related to machine design, materials, manufacturing processes, and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of machine shop practices, fabrication methods, and assembly processes.
  • Basic understanding of industrial equipment and machinery.
  • Proficiency with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software; SolidWorks experience preferred.
  • Ability to interpret engineering specifications and technical documents.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and applied engineering mathematics.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and logical reasoning skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to customer sites.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate degree or Technical Degree in Mechanical Design, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Drafting, or a related field preferred.
  • 2 plus years of mechanical design experience in an industrial manufacturing or machinery environment.
  • Experience designing custom equipment or automated machinery is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with custom machinery, converting equipment, packaging equipment, or industrial automation.
  • Experience with Product Data Management (PDM) systems.
  • Familiarity with pneumatic systems and schematic development.
  • Understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing and field installations.
