WSP is currently initiating a search for a Transmission Assistant Civil Engineer for our Syracuse, New York office.

This Opportunity
The selected candidate would be involved in projects with our Syracuse Power Delivery – Overhead Transmission Line Team and be a part of a member of a growing organization that understands our clients’ challenges and delivers innovative, effective solutions.
Contribute to providing local technical assistance for the design, development and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sectors. Tasks may include basic assistance with the research, design, concept development, and construction of overhead transmission lines ranging from 69kV to 765kV. Generates accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project. Challenges current practices and collaborates with our subject matter experts to meet or exceed industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

Challenge current design practices to help enhance the quality of work within the department.

Promote the department’s culture of teamwork, improvement and success through collaboration.

Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, survey, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design and construction.

Assist with execution of professional overhead transmission line engineering work relating to conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, building, infrastructure, and transportation channels to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.

Execute engineering calculations with concepts from structural analysis, concrete/ steel design, soil mechanics, foundation design, and surveying.

Learn basic principles of Overhead Transmission Line Engineering.

Perform routine engineering functions and provide entry-level technical assistance on various design requirements, to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, systems, and infrastructure.

Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site and provided basic technical assistance on various engineering, design, and construction issues.

Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field/ work site notebooks/ logs.

Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction.

Complete training on assigned tasks.

Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (including but not limited to Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, etc.).
- -
- 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience.
- -
- Express an interest in Overhead Transmission Line Engineering and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
- -
- Demonstrate ability to investigate and diagnose issues to their true root cause and apply advanced problem-solving methods to develop effective solutions.
- -
- Passion to work collaboratively with others to create unique solutions and understand the why behind transmission line design variables.
- -
- Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
- -
- Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to execute project work.
- -
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
- -
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- -
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- -
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications

- Engineer in Training Certification.
- -
- Familiarity with disciple-specific design software (i.e., PLS-CADD Suite, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Excel).
- -
- Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
- -
- A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
