About The Role
The Patient Placement Coordinator’s primary purpose is to effectively and efficiently monitor the placement of patients from multiple portals or admission and communicates with clinical staff. This position will work collaboratively and cooperatively with clinical staff to create a safe environment for critical thinking and productive strategic thinking. They will actively participate in organizational improvement processes impacting patient placement and throughput. Finally, the Patient Placement Coordinator will meet or exceed established customer service goals and maintains relationships and the ability to negotiate with clinical customers.
Job Responsibilities
Supporting and coordinating all patient placement activities during the hours of operations. Adhering to the policies, procedures, and the guidelines governing patient placement, EMTALA regulations, and admitting and registration procedures. Facilitating delegated administrative and clinical activities for nursing related to patient placement. Processing the clinical and management knowledge and ability to provide guidance and assistance to nursing, supportive services, and physicians. Facilitates interpretation and implementation of facility policies and standards. The patient placement coordinator is cross-trained to efficiently complete all duties needed for patient placement as well as coordination of nursing department staffing. Reviews and plans for all scheduled admissions daily. Actively participates in organizational improvement processes impacting patient placement and throughput. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as requested.
Clinical Skills
Works with nursing units and leaders to identify best available bed placement at the time of request, given patient needs, staffing resources, level of care requirements, infection control principles, and throughput goals.
Has the ability to answer and direct incoming calls from Physician’s office staff, ancillary departments and other facilities. Answers inquiries concerning hospital policies.

- Navigates complex admission and transfer requests by working collaboratively with others within the organization.
Communication/Interpretation Skills
PPC collaborates with nursing leadership to maximize staffing resources. The position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to multi-task. Must be able to respond quickly to changing environments.
Must communicate effectively and meet or exceed established customer service goals. Maintains relationships and the ability to negotiate with clinical customers.
Coordinates with key departments such as admitting, EVS, case management to ensure timely patient admissions and a positive patient family experience.
Demonstrates positive and timely communication with internal and external customers.
Education and Leadership Skills
Provides education and training/mentoring for other staff members. Attends department meetings and reviews procedural & process changes per facility specific guidelines.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

EDUCATION: High School Diploma, Associates Degree preferred or equivalent combination education and experience.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: One to three years’ experience in Patient Placement or Bed Booking. Must have/gain knowledge of the Hospital Medical Staff rules and infection control policies to be effective in this position.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Analytical skills required to make decisions based on the facility and clinical situation at hand.
Computer Literacy – use of multiple systems
Epic, Passport, OnBase, Microsoft Office products and Midas.
Excellent communication, problem solving skills, and ability to deal with customers who are often adversarial. Ability to be flexible, organized and function well in stressful situations. Ability to interact Independently to resolve Customer Service issues.
Typing (minimum of 35 words per minute or equivalent key strokes).
Must understand medical terminology and acuity levels.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
- Annual Registration Competency Review with 95% or greater score obtained.
- Annual STAT testing completed.
