About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Mental Health Specialist to play a key clinical leadership role within our Citywide CAMHS Service. This is a fast-paced and varied role requiring an experienced clinician who is confident working autonomously with complexity, providing evidence-based interventions, managing significant risk and supporting the delivery of high-quality mental health services for children, young people and families.

As a Mental Health Specialist, you will hold a diverse caseload of children and young people presenting with complex emotional wellbeing and mental health needs. You will undertake specialist assessments, develop formulations and deliver evidence-based therapeutic interventions, whilst supporting children, young people and families to achieve positive outcomes. You will be confident working with a broad range of presentations and able to adapt interventions to meet individual need.

Alongside your direct clinical work, you will provide consultation, therapeutic supervision and case oversight to practitioners across the service. You will be responsible for authorising assessments, formulations and intervention plans, ensuring clinical decision-making is evidence-based, proportionate and responsive to risk. You will support practitioners to manage complexity and uncertainty and contribute to maintaining high standards of clinical practice across the service.

A key aspect of the role will be providing leadership in relation to complex and high-risk presentations. This includes supporting and managing work involving self-harm, suicidal ideation, significant safeguarding concerns, trauma, neurodevelopmental differences, emotional dysregulation, exploitation risks and other contextual vulnerabilities. The post holder will be expected to demonstrate advanced clinical judgement, contribute to multi-agency decision-making and take shared responsibility for risk management, safeguarding decision-making and the overall safety of the service.

The role will include consultation, group delivery, transitions work, participation in screening and Single Point of Access activity, and supporting pathway development across CAMHS. You will contribute to complex screening discussions and decision-making, ensuring children and young people are allocated to the most appropriate intervention and pathway based on need, risk and clinical presentation.

As a senior clinician, you will support service quality, staff development and continuous improvement through supervision, mentoring, consultation and the modelling of high-quality clinical practice. You will work collaboratively with health, education, social care and voluntary sector partners to promote effective multi-agency working and ensure children and young people receive coordinated, trauma-informed and responsive care.

About You

The ideal candidate will have

• A recognised professional qualification in a mental health-related discipline, such as Social Work, Mental Health Nursing, Clinical Psychology, Systemic Family Therapy or another relevant profession, with current professional registration where applicable.
• A recognised Low Intensity Supervision qualification, alongside advanced post-qualifying training in evidence-based therapeutic interventions and demonstrable experience of providing clinical supervision, consultation and professional leadership within children's mental health services.
• Extensive experience of undertaking specialist mental health assessments, formulation and delivering evidence-based therapeutic interventions to children, young people and families presenting with highly complex mental health, neurodevelopmental, relational and psychosocial needs, often involving multiple interacting factors and significant levels of risk.
• Significant experience of providing clinical leadership and oversight in relation to complex and high-risk presentations, including self-harm, suicidality, safeguarding concerns, exploitation, trauma and contextual vulnerabilities, whilst supporting multi-agency decision-making, risk management and service delivery.
• Expert knowledge of child and adolescent mental health, child development, attachment, trauma, neurodiversity and evidence-based therapeutic approaches, with the ability to apply theory, research and clinical evidence to complex assessment, formulation and intervention planning.
• Expert knowledge of safeguarding, contextual safeguarding, risk assessment and risk management, including the ability to navigate ambiguity, balance competing risks and provide defensible clinical decision-making in highly complex situations.
• Exceptional clinical assessment, formulation and intervention skills, with the ability to synthesise complex information from multiple sources, develop psychologically informed formulations and deliver or authorise interventions that promote safe, effective and outcome-focused care.
• Highly developed ability to exercise autonomous clinical judgement, lead complex decision-making and provide authoritative consultation, supervision and professional challenge to colleagues and partner agencies in relation to safeguarding, risk management, service access and care planning.
• A DBS enhanced check for a regulated activity is required for this post.
