About The Role

The Commercial Barge Operator carries out the tasks required to meet the contractual obligations of deals agreed by their traders or refinery schedulers. They will liaise with internal departments, customers and other external parties such as third-party operations, brokers and independent inspectors as part of implementing each contract supporting the trading team.

The right candidate with a solid commercial mindset, will have the freedom and opportunity to significantly contribute to the profitability of the Middle Distillates trading team.

Demonstrate solid team working skills and have self-starter qualities. Be able to work accurately and focused under pressure and will exhibit strong communication skills. The willingness to assume responsibility for and ownership and accountability of operational tasks is essential. Attention to detail and good personal organization with the ability to prioritize in order to meet critical deadlines.

Dimension

The scope of this position as Barge Operator is to optimize the product supply chain to ensure a consistent and traceable supply of product whilst maximizing the supply, distribution and trading P&L and complying with compliance, customs, tax and trade regulations. Close liaison with Traders, Account Manager, Channel Optimizers, Refinery Schedulers and Freight Team is required to ensure that all contractual and operational obligations arising from the contractual agreements are carried out.

Be a team player, contributing to the success of the entire team Ensure the feasibility of refinery and depot stocks by managing / controlling supply and demand planning Work as part of a team to ensure that the right product of correct quality is delivered to the right place at the right time, cost effectively Seek to add value by exercising embedded commercial and logistical deal options Adopt a pro-active approach to problem solving Deal with oil and freight counterparties, terminals and vessels on a regular/continuous basis regarding all pre/current and post-deal activities Ensure necessary operational information is passed on in good time and documentary requirements are met Monitor progress of the various oil movements Ensure that all oil and freight operational information is entered into Trading systems (e.g. FED/DEX/Voyager) in timely fashion and ensure that adequate records are kept meeting the company's legal and fiscal obligations Ensure that all data pertaining to barge claims/demurrage are recorded in the trading systems to enable efficient handling by the relevant claims/demurrage department Liaise with (Freight desk) charterers to ensure smooth operations Work closely with remotely located financial settlements department to ensure that deals are correctly settled in a timely manner Be accountable for administration tasks such as stock accounting, monthly stock closing and processing invoices Ensuring that the Operations Support Desks are provided with all relevant information to perform the administrative tasks are performed “first time right” Contribute to maximizing Operational Excellence by adding value through:

Skills and Requirements

Sense of ownership and accountability of operational impact on P&L and cost structure of own scope

Initiate and take responsibility for process improvement opportunities within desk and/or product line

Intermediate project management skills. Able to perform small to medium once-off projects besides the core tasks

Foresees and minimizes potential issues and solves problems in cooperation with other departments and individuals. Carries out root cause analysis and proposes workable improvements both to own team and in a wider context.

Pro-actively identifies the needs for help in the team and acts upon. E.g. by covering for other team members by (un)planned leave and covering duty role

At least 2 years work experience in a Trading Organization and experience in working with the following Shell systems: DEX, FED, OAS, and Credit Monitor

The job will involve a significant amount of after office hours calls (weekend and evenings)

​A good level of fluency in English, both written and spoken is required. Fluency in an additional language e.g. German, Dutch or French is preferred but not required.
