Job Description
The Chief Underwriting Officer, Bermuda will support the strategic growth initiative for offshore individual life insurance by providing high level life underwriting expertise and support to Partnership team and brokers on critical life cases. The CUO will underwrite the High Net Worth (HNW) and Ultra High Net Worth (UHNW) offshore business with complex individual life insurance cases for Sun Life's Bermuda business. This position will be responsible for attending sales meetings and conduct training seminars on underwriting and related topics, such as medical advances, new technology, financial underwriting and reinsurance and uphold underwriting guidelines and risk selection as outlined in reinsurance treaties and published underwriting guidelines. The CUO will provide guidance and mentoring to other underwriters to get the best out of the team and serve as a change champion within the business.
Position Responsibilities
- Proven creditability in senior management, life insurance product underwriting role in the financial services industry
- Experience in multiple countries or, in offshore international life insurance underwriting
- Assessing risk on UHNW, complex cases for offshore Bermuda life business and international
- Assisting with developing and implementing underwriting philosophy granting final approval or declination of an application and communicating decisions on complex cases
- Assisting in developing and maintaining reinsurance relationships and participating in product development efforts
- Developing/ maintaining positive field relationships by providing timely service, making sound underwriting decisions and making field visits as appropriate
- Leading and participating in large-scale projects and workstreams, demonstrating the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results on time and within budget
- Fostering synergy within the underwriting team and with internal stakeholders by promoting open communication, collaboration, and knowledge sharing
- Championing change initiatives within the organization, actively promoting a culture of continuous improvement and innovation
- Demonstrating strong leadership skills by mentoring team members, driving performance, and creating a positive team dynamic
- Position Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree in business or related field
- Qualified Underwriter (FLMI or FALU) with a minimum 10 years underwriting experience with demonstrated underwriting approval authority of $25 million or higher from a major life insurance company
- In-depth experience in underwriting individual insurance face amounts $25 million and over
- Excellent understanding of underwriting practices and procedures including reinsurance and contestable claim procedures
- Extreme confidence in decision making abilities and in knowledge of underwriting best practices
- Strong detail orientation in order to review, understand and interpret complex medical records, medical tests and financial reports
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, both verbal and written, in order to explain and discuss underwriting decisions and procedures with Partnership team, brokers managers, clients, other underwriters and company representatives
- Technical skills applicable to underwriting, related software, communicating and completing projects and reports
- Experience in presenting company underwriting practices and procedures to internal and external parties
- Proven track record of successful project management and leadership in complex, multi-stakeholder environments
- Demonstrated ability to drive change and implement new processes or technologies within an underwriting team
- Experience in building and maintaining high-performing teams, with a focus on developing talent and improving team dynamics
- Strong strategic thinking skills with the ability to align team goals with broader organizational objectives
- Ability to travel as needed for work and be willing to relocate for this role if required.
