Required Experience

Experience in advanced clinical medical education, residency preparation, transition-to-residency programming, or fourth-year medical student education
Experience teaching and mentoring medical students
Demonstrated leadership in undergraduate medical education
Experience coordinating clinical training or electives
Demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments and institutions
Experience desig ning , implementing, and evaluating experiential or immersive learning experiences
Experience in global health, humanitarian service, or international medical education

Preferred Experience

Experience leading advanced clinical curriculum, acting internship program(s), or transition-to-residency curriculum
Experience with student assessment, competency-based medical education, and educational program evaluation
Prior experience serving as a course director or developing and overseeing immersive learning experiences
Experience mentoring student scholarly projects
Familiarity with competency-based medical education and LCME standards
Experience building partnerships with clinical, community, and/or international organizations
Experience managing student placements, site partnerships, faculty or mentor participation, and assessment within an experiential course

Job Summary

The Director of Phase 3 Curriculum is a senior educational leader responsible for the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the final phase of the BYU School of Medicine curriculum. Phase 3 is an 18-month immersion phase, which includes advanced clinical experiences, acting internships, electives, structured career development, the transition-to-residency course, the longitudinal Global Medical Practice and Applied Research course, and the 8-12-week Global Health & Research Immersi ve Experience (“Immersive Experience”) in a global health setting abroad or domestically . The Phase 3 Director also serves as course director for the Immersive Experience .

The Director reports to the Associate Dean of Curriculum and collaborates closely with the Associate Dean of Global Health & Humanitarian Service and the Associate Dean of Research. The Director also works closely with the Phase 2 Director to ensur e alignment and continuity in the operational structure of electives, selectives , and other clerkship rotations, leveraging the frameworks and processes established in Phase 2. The Dir ector of Phase 3 Curriculum will also work closely with course directors, faculty mentors, clerkship directors, global partners, and administrative leaders to ensure students successfully transition from medical school to residency through advanced clinical training, residency preparation, career development, scholarly activity , humanitarian service, and global health experiences. As course director for the Immersive Experience, the Phase 3 Director provides direct leadership for the course’s design, implementation, administration, assessment, and continuous improvement.

This is a full-time faculty position , designed for a physician educator with experience in undergraduate medical education, clinical training, student mentorship, and experiential learning in global health. This position will support the mission of the School of Medicine to " provide a spiritually grounded and scientifically rigorous education for physicians who will minister to God’s children throughout the world as healers, teachers, researchers, leaders, and disciples of Jesus Christ." T he BYU School of Medicine is a newly established organization within the university. As the school continues to launch and grow, a successful candidate must demonstrate adaptability and a willingness to take on evolving responsibilities and assignments to support its effective implementation and ongoing operations.

Duties/Expectations

Provide strategic oversight of all Phase 3 curricular components and ensure integration of the Immersive Experience with other Phase 3 exper iences .
Serve as course director for the 8-12-week Global Health & Research Immersive Experience, with primary responsibility for its design, implementation, administration, assessment, evaluation, and continuous improvement.
Provide oversight of advanced clinical experiences, sub-internships, specialty exploration opportunities, the Global Medical Practice and Applied Research course , and residency preparation activities that support successful transition to graduate medical education.
Collaborate with course directors, clerkship directors, and faculty to develop, coordinate, and continuously improve Phase 3 curricular experiences.
Coordinate with the Senior Associate Dean of Academics, Associate Dean of Curriculum, Associate Dean of Student Experience and Well-being, Associate Dean of Student Progress, Associate Dean of Global Health & Humanitarian Service, Associate Dean of Research , and their staff to support student success and ensure appropriate progression , assessment, and tracking of curricular milestones.
Monitor student achievement, assessment outcomes, and program effectiveness across Phase 3 and the Immersive Experience, while contributing to accreditation compliance, continuous quality improvement, and curricular innovation.
Collaborate closely with the Associate Dean of Global Health & Humanitarian Service, the Associate Dean of Research, other course directors, and relevant faculty and staff to deliver and continuously improve the Immersive Experience, including its student placements, mentorship, assessment, partnerships, scholarly activities, and program evaluation.
Ensure Phase 3 activities and the Immersive Experience align with institutional goals, community needs, ethical engagement principles, accreditation standards, and student learning outcomes.
Support student mentorship, assessment, career development, residency preparation, and professional identity formation throughout Phase 3.
Teach within the Phase 3 curriculum , including the Immersive Experience, and foster student reflection and integration of faith, service, scholarship, and medicine.
Promote scholarship, innovation, and dissemination related to medical education, global health, humanitarian service, implementation science , and clinical research.
Contribute to curriculum review and curriculum integration with Phase 1 and Phase 2, program evaluation, continuous quality improvement, accreditation activities, and educational innovation.
Help foster and maintain partnerships with clinical affiliates, community organizations, international collaborators, and Church humanitarian efforts that enhance student learning and advance the S chool’s mission.
Participate in curriculum and governance committees and represent Phase 3 , including the Immersi ve Experience , in institutional planning and accreditation efforts.
Serve as a role model of professionalism, discipleship, covenant belonging, and Christlike service.
Domestic and international travel, as well as occasional evening and weekend responsibilities, will be required to support the Immersive Experience, partner relationships, and other Phase 3 activities.
May be assigned additional responsibilities within the School of Medicine, including teaching, curriculum development, committee service, and other institutional initiatives.
