Transit and Rail Engineering Intern- Summer 2027

WSP USA hosts hundreds of internships across the United States to gain hands-on, meaningful work experience to enhance their education and professional aptitude. Our interns gain exposure to real projects while working side by side with senior staff. Our D.C transportation team is seeking a Temp, Full-Time, Transit and Rail Engineering Intern to work out of our Washington, D. C. office. This position is geared towards currently enrolled 3rd year Undergraduates but open to enrolled Undergraduate/Master & PhD students.

This internship will be part of the WSP Summer Internship Program. As a summer intern, you have the opportunity to participate in our 12-week program scheduled to start on May 17th, 2027. The individual start date of the internship may be flexible.

Your Impact

• Support a variety of engineering and engineering decision making tasks.
• Learn basic principles of Transit Program Management which includes workflow management, Project Management, Construction Management, Asset Management, or Transportation Planning. which include workflow management
• Assist in preparing comparative analysis of alternatives for technical management decision making
• Support preparation of project scopes and cost estimates
• Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs

• Work is primarily located in the Washington, DC region and candidates should expect regular client or in-person office work.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

• Actively enrolled in an accredited civil engineering, mechanical engineering, applied management science, or related Undergraduate program. OR Actively enrolled in an accredited in similar programs, or related, Masters or PhD program.
• Demonstrated interest in civil or transportation infrastructure, or related field, with a strong desire to develop skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
• Strong interpersonal, written, verbal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while also taking initiative and managing assisted tasks independently.
• Ability to take direction from projects managers, mentors, and team leaders and effectively execute assigned project responsibilities.
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams) and familiarity with technical software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, GIS, Power BI, or similar tools.
• String organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Demonstrated problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking skills through coursework, projects, research, or extracurricular and DPN activities
• Commitment to workplace safety and the ability to comply with WSP’s health, safety, ethics and workplace conduct policies.
• Authorized to work in the United States at the start of the internship.
• Willing to work in person in the DC Capital Region

Preferred Qualifications

• Currently enrolled 3rd year undergraduate student with a May 2028 graduation
• Experience in civil and transportation infrastructure
• Prior internship, research, leadership, or volunteer experience related to transportation or infrastructure.
• Demonstrated leadership, initiative, and teamwork through campus organizations, student chapters or other extracurricular activities

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $25.66 - $31.37

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
