About The Role

The Housekeeper is responsible for providing housekeeping services for all of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church campus, which includes the Church Building, the Benish Center Parish Hall, the Parish Office, the Religious Education Building and Classrooms, the Schoenstatt Area and a perimeter. The job will also include cleaning between events and servicing trash and restroom needs. The position reports to the Facilities Operations Coordinator and operates under close supervision with little latitude for independent judgment and initiative.

Requirements

Ministerial Character

The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the parish of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ’s mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.

Positions employed at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.

Essential Job Duties

As an integral part of your ministry for the Church as carried out in this position, support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in both your professional and personal life.

Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed.

Serves as a member of the parish staff Attending all staff meetings, prayer days, and educational days.

General Cleaning includes

  • Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors
  • Dusting and wiping down pews, altars, and furniture
  • Emptying and replacing trash liners
  • Cleaning and sanitizing windows, doors, and glass surfaces

Sanctuary & Worship Areas

  • Vacuuming
  • Cleaning and dusting
  • Assist Full-time Housekeeper with church cleaning as needed.

Restrooms

  • Scrubbing toilets, sinks, and urinals
  • Refilling soap, paper towels, and toilet paper
  • Mopping and disinfecting floors
  • Removing odors and maintaining air fresheners

Parish Hall & Meeting Rooms

  • Wiping down tables and chairs
  • Cleaning floors after events
  • Sanitizing high-touch areas (doorknobs, light switches)

Kitchen & Dining Areas

  • Cleaning countertops, sinks, and appliances
  • Sweeping/mopping floors and disinfecting surfaces
  • Taking out food-related trash and ensuring proper waste disposal

RE Classrooms

  • Dusting desks, chairs, and bookshelves
  • Emptying trash bins and recycling
  • Sanitizing shared equipment (phones, keyboards, door handle)
  • Sweeping/mopping floors

Exterior & Entryway

  • Sweeping sidewalks and entrances
  • Cleaning door handles, windows, and signage
  • Emptying outdoor trash bins Removing cobwebs and debris from entryways

Additional Services (as needed)

  • Cleaning light fixtures
  • Disinfecting spaces after significant events or services
  • Maintain cleanliness of housekeeping closets in RE Building, Benish Center and Church)
  • Other Duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Cleaning Techniques – Proper methods for sweeping, mopping, dusting, and sanitizing.
  • Chemical Usage & Safety – Knowledge of cleaning agents, disinfectants, and their safe handling (e.g., Material Safety Data Sheets - MSDS).
  • Equipment Operation – How to use vacuums, floor buffers, carpet cleaners, and pressure washers.
  • Building Maintenance Basics – Minor repairs, changing light bulbs, unclogging drains, etc.
  • Waste Disposal & Recycling – Proper sorting and disposal of trash and hazardous materials.
  • Workplace Safety Procedures – OSHA standards, slip-and-fall prevention, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Time Management & Scheduling – Prioritizing tasks to maintain cleanliness efficiently.

Skills

  • Attention to Detail – Spotting dirt, spills, and areas needing maintenance.
  • Physical Stamina & Strength – Ability to stand, bend, lift, and carry heavy objects (e.g., trash bags, equipment).
  • Communication Skills – Interacting with staff, reporting issues, and following instructions.
  • Problem-Solving – Identifying and addressing maintenance and cleaning challenges.
  • Time Management – Completing tasks efficiently within a set schedule.
  • Teamwork & Independence – Working well with others or alone with minimal supervision.
  • Abilities:
  • Follow Instructions Accurately – Understanding written and verbal cleaning procedures.
  • Work in Different Conditions – Handling outdoor cleaning, extreme temperatures, and different surfaces, ability to lift at least 40 lbs., and work independently at a fast pace
  • Maintain Confidentiality & Professionalism – Respecting private spaces and information.
  • Adaptability – Adjusting to different tasks, schedules, and emergencies.
  • Reliability & Dependability – Being punctual and consistently completing duties.
  • Language – Ability to communicate in English

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Trainings

High School diploma or GED equivalent is required

Experience

  • One year of experience working in a related field
  • Experience working within the Catholic Community is preferred

Catholic Requirement

Must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Must comply with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout employment.

Working Conditions

  • All employees of the Parish are engaged in ministry and closely tied to the Pastor in the exercise of his ministry and obligations to the church.
  • The Parish is an at-will employer.
  • All buildings and vehicles owned by the Parish are tobacco free.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment with priorities and plans that may change rapidly.
  • Working on weekends and evenings, and some holidays may be required.
  • Will be exposed to religious ceremonies, conduct, and speech, including Roman Catholic Christian prayer and liturgical celebrations.
  • Will be required to adhere to established dress codes and conduct standards.
  • May be required to use personal or parish vehicle to drive to off-site locations.
  • Travelling within and outside the parish to meetings and other events may be required, and travel may require overnight lodging.
