About The Role

Are you passionate about shaping the future of energy research and helping groundbreaking discoveries reach the global scientific community?

Do you thrive on engaging with leading researchers, identifying emerging scientific trends, and influencing the direction of a world-leading journal?

About our Team

Since its launch in 2017, Joule has become one of the world’s leading journals for cutting-edge energy research, as well as insightful analysis and commentary on sustainable energy.

About the role

We are seeking a Scientific Editor with expertise in photovoltaics to join the Joule editorial team and contribute to the journal’s continued development as a leading destination for transformative energy research.

Working closely with and reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, the Scientific Editor will play a key role in developing Joule’s coverage of photovoltaic science and technology, while also contributing across the journal’s broader energy scope. The editor will assess and manage research submissions, identify emerging areas of scientific importance, commission influential content, and build strong relationships with researchers around the world. The successful candidate will bring a strong understanding of the photovoltaics research landscape, from fundamental materials and device physics through emerging solar cell technologies, stability, manufacturing and scale-up, and will help identify research with the potential to shape the future of solar energy conversion. They will help shape the scientific direction of the journal and ensure that the work published in Joule is rigorous, distinctive, impactful, and relevant to the global energy research community.

Responsibilities

  • Handling manuscripts through the editorial and peer-review process, rigorously evaluating submissions against Joule's demanding standards for scientific quality, technical rigor, originality, and broader significance, and making well-reasoned editorial decisions.
  • Attracting submissions of high-quality research articles and commissioning reviews, perspectives, commentaries, and other editorial content from leading researchers and experts.
  • Traveling to international conferences, workshops, and research institutions to engage with scientists, identify emerging research directions, and promote the journal and portfolio.
  • Collaborating with editorial teams across Cell Press to understand the vision and scope of relevant journals, identify manuscripts suitable for transfer to the most appropriate journal, and strengthen the representation of energy research across the portfolio.
  • Contributing to broader editorial and strategic projects across Cell Press.

Requirements

  • A PhD in a field relevant to Joule's scope, with significant research expertise in photovoltaics.
  • Prior editorial experience is preferred; exceptional early-career candidates with a strong research background will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to think conceptually and critically across a broad range of scientific and technical topics.
  • Strong existing networks within the global energy research community, with the ability to engage effectively with researchers at all career stages and across international boundaries.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, with the ability to communicate complex scientific ideas and editorial decisions clearly and constructively.
