The North Carolina General Assembly’s (NCGA) Food Services division is seeking experienced food service professional(s) to join their team as a Food Services Assistant I. You will work closely with other Food Services staff to contribute to the overall operation of our Legislative Cafeteria and to Snack Bars, which are open Monday – Friday. Individuals in these positions play an integral role to ensuring our elected officials, legislative staff, and General Assembly visitors have excellent dining experiences while eating or visiting one of our three fully operational legislative complex food locations.

This vacancy announcement will be used to hire multiple professionals with duties and experience in the following areas

Snack Bar

  • Greeting guests in a friendly and polite manner
  • Take food orders accurately
  • Prepare and serve food to meet customer preferences
  • Provides information about items on the menu.
  • Ensures proper food handling procedures are followed including wrapping, labeling, dating, stocking, storing. rotating and checking temperature of products
  • Always behave in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Fulfill all opening and closing procedures.

Cashier Register

  • Operates cash register, receives payment from customer in cash or by CC, accurately counts and provides change to customers as required.
  • Responsible for opening and closing cash drawer and closeout; responsible for cashing patrons out, giving correct change, and accurately counting and recording drawer amounts at the beginning and end of each shift.

Utilities

  • Cleans and stocks snack bar.
  • Assists with the daily cleaning and washing of cooking utensils and equipment; cleans floors, trays, tables, countertops, and serving utensils.
  • Operates dishwashing equipment or cleans serving and food preparation equipment by hand.
  • Operates vacuum cleaners, mops, and other cleaning equipment and materials.
  • Assists in carrying food items to dumpsters in accordance with NCGA standards.

The individual in the position(s) will support meal service while maintaining high standards of quality, sanitation and kitchen safety practices. The position(s) involves several aspects of food service operations, including daily cleaning tasks, food preparation, and food service. Work is subject to supervision by the Food Services Manager and is reviewed regularly for successful completion of assignments in the Cafeteria and Snack Bars and other duties as assigned.

Normal scheduled hours are generally from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., Monday – Friday or until closing of the Legislative Cafeteria and Snack Bars. Occasionally, early or late shifts may be required to cover special events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities/Competencies

  • Ability to learn food preparation and related cleaning procedures.
  • Ability to perform moderately heavy physical labor for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of personal cleanliness and food sanitation in a cafeteria or snack bar operation.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and customers.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended schedules as required with General Assembly Food Services operations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with legislators, legislative staff and the public on a daily basis.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED certificate or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted.
  • Experience in food service that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade.
  • Please Note : Preference will be given to individuals who have obtained their ServSafe certification from the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation.
