Job Description
The Maine Department of Transportation is seeking an Engineering Aide to join the Materials Testing & Exploration Section at the MaineDOT Central Laboratory in Bangor.
This is an entry-level position providing hands-on support for the testing and evaluation of construction materials used in Maine's transportation infrastructure. The Engineering Aide will work as part of a small laboratory team performing routine testing of soils and aggregates and assisting laboratory staff with sample preparation, testing, documentation, and laboratory operations.
This position is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in engineering, construction, transportation, geology, materials testing, or other technical fields to develop practical laboratory experience. Training will be provided in MaineDOT procedures, laboratory equipment, testing methods, and applicable AASHTO and ASTM standards. Typical duties include:
- Performing routine laboratory testing of soil and aggregate samples in accordance with established MaineDOT, AASHTO, and ASTM procedures.
- Preparing, weighing, measuring, labeling, and handling material samples; operating laboratory testing equipment and performing routine cleaning and care.
- Accurately recording, organizing, and entering test data and assisting laboratory technicians with testing activities and related laboratory projects.
- Following established laboratory and safety procedures, maintaining a clean and organized work area, and developing proficiency in additional testing and sampling procedures through training and experience.
To be minimally qualified for this position candidates must provide evidence of the following experience
High school diploma or equivalent, and training or work experience which would demonstrate a knowledge of basic mathematics and an ability to read and comprehend manuals, maps, charts, and graphs.
