Summary

The GI Technician is responsible for the technical support to physicians in the GI lab and related assistance to patients undergoing GI Lab procedures. Responsible to maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Responsible for setting up equipment and supplies for GI cases along with cleaning and high-level disinfection of endoscopes and accessories. Assist and inform physicians and nurses of relevant information. Demonstrate competency, efficiency, and leadership in performing basic endoscopic procedures and in applying new technology.

Responsibilities

Job Description

  • Demonstrates ability to problem-solve in relation to the procedure being performed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of various equipment, procedures and supplies.
  • Adheres to proper procedures of aseptic technique and safety in the use of instruments and equipment.
  • Secures and prepares all supplies and instruments required for diagnostics and therapeutic intervention before procedures.
  • Position and re-position patient during procedures.
  • Helps monitor patients during procedure.
  • Provide supportive care during the pre-operative phase.
  • Ensures that specimens are correctly handled and routed to the proper source.
  • Maintains current knowledge of anatomy/physiology and medications used intraoperatively.
  • Follows all federal, state, and departmental safety procedures.

Skills

  • Tech various types of basic endoscopic procedures.
  • Maintain competency in handling and reprocessing of endoscopes used in basic endoscopic procedures.

*Assist in taking patient vital signs and reporting them to nursing staff

  • Assist in recovery room with ambulating patients, cleaning soiled stretchers, and dressing cleaned stretchers

Qualifications

High School or GED required.

Minimum 1 year customer service experience required, hospital or outpatient setting preferred.

Experience or training in GI Lab procedure room setting is preferred, but not required. Receives on the job training and competency verification to perform primary functions.

BLS required.
