JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Senior Counselor promotes and supports the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of the campus community. This role primarily focuses on providing counseling and consultation related to mental health issues for our students, residents, and fellows who face the unique challenges of rigorous clinical training. The Senior Counselor also develops and implements wellness programs as requested by various Deans of the college, the Office of Student Success, and department chairs and/or Graduate Medical Education program directors related to optimal workplace culture, civility, stress management, conflict management and other holistic needs of campus learners. Additionally, they serve as an advisor for campus leadership to assist in ensuring that institutional policies and practices align with the highest ideals of excellence in learning and workplace cultures.
- Provides one-on-one counseling sessions to medical students, residents, and fellows to address mental health concerns, stress management, and personal challenges.
- Conducts initial assessments to identify individual patient needs and develop tailored behavioral therapy and wellness plans.
- Provides psychoeducation and process-oriented counseling groups.
- Develops and implements a comprehensive wellness strategy aligned with the institution's mission and goals.
- Contributes to the creation and implementation of policies and procedures that promote physical, mental, and emotional health across campus.
- Maintains budgets for wellness programs, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
- Participates in campuswide mental health support and intervention efforts through consultation with the Director of Wellness and contribution to the CARE Team.
- Oversees the development, planning, and execution of a variety of educational training offerings, wellness programs, workshops, and events for the campus community.
- Develops evidence-based workshops, seminars, and training sessions on topics such as stress management, resilience building, mindfulness, communication, suicide prevention, civility, and healthy lifestyle practices
- Ensures compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations related to wellness programs.
- Represents the institution at conferences, workshops or panels related to health promotion and wellness in academic settings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- EDUCATION: Master’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a closely related field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
- EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience providing prevention, education, and treatment to college students.
- LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Licensed or license-eligible within one (1) years as a mental health provider in the state of Tennessee. (COPY OF LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)

- Excellent human relations and communication skills: showing ability to work with populations and establish/maintain collaborative relationships with individuals and organizations both within and external to the university.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current issues impacting health science graduate/professional students and specific higher-risk groups.
- Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to ongoing development.
- Creativity and imagination to envision and initiate original solutions to challenging behavioral, mental health and wellness problems.
- Ability to facilitate meetings and groups, coach, and mentor students.
- Ability to establish and maintain a level of confidentiality congruent with the policies of the University and governing licensing/ethical bodies.
- Experience in the design and implementation of training events and programs.
- Ability to evaluate students through consultations and utilize skills to assess student needs and prepare improvement plans.
- Ability to respond to urgent and/or crisis situations.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational techniques; ability to remain calm under pressure and be able to function in an extremely fast-paced environment.
- Ability to initiate, coordinate, oversee and complete various projects in a team atmosphere with minimal supervision.
- Commitment to collaboration with campus partners and university stakeholders.

WORK SCHEDULE : This position may occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends.
