The Skilled Tradesman, Electrician performs skilled electrical work in the installation, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems in campus buildings and facilities. Work includes wiring, fixtures, equipment, circuits, and related components. The position reads and interprets technical documents, diagnoses electrical issues, and completes work in accordance with applicable electrical codes and safety practices. The position supports safe and reliable electrical service across college facilities.

Essential Duties

  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical systems in buildings, including wiring, fixtures, equipment, circuits, and related components
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, manuals, schematics, building plans, and work drawings to complete electrical work
  • Diagnoses electrical problems and determines appropriate repairs or replacement of wiring, fixtures, equipment or components
  • Performs routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on existing electrical systems to reduce malfunctions and service interruptions
  • Completes electrical work in accordance with applicable electrical codes, law, regulations, and safety practices
  • Uses appropriate hand tools, power tools, meters, and testing equipment to safety perform assigned electrical work
  • Prepares material estimates and maintains an inventory of needed electrical parts, materials, and tools
  • Additional duties may be assigned as necessary to support the goals and objectives of the department and college

Rate of Pay: $25.82 per hour *Higher compensation may be considered based on qualifications directly related to position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma
  • Completion for required electrician education or training associate with the required license or certicfication

Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements, except certification or licensure requirements, upon approval of the Qualifications Review Committee.

Required License(s)/Certification(s)

  • Journeyman Electrician license in accordance with ACA 17-28-304

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expericene installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in commercial, institutional, or similar facilities
  • Experience troubleshooting circuits, wiring, fixtures, equipment, and electrical components
  • Technical or trade-school education in electrical systems or a related field

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of electrical methods, practices, processes, materials, tools, and safety precautions
  • Knowledge of laws, codes, and regulations applicable to electrical work
  • Knowledge of electrical theory, circuits, and wiring methods
  • Skills in inspecting, troubleshooting, installing, maintaining, an repairing electrical systems and components
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, manuals, schematics, building plans, and work drawings
  • Ability to apply mathematical and analytical skills when estimating materials and evaluating electrical work
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain inventories of electrical parts, materials, and tools

Physical Demands/Work Environment

The position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy materials and

objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper

equipment. The employee must be able to stand and walk for long periods; work in and around buildings, confined spaces, machinery, and elevated locations; climb and descend ladders; operate a motor vehicle; and use varied hand and power tools. Work may occur indoors and outdoors in hot, cold, or rainy conditions. The position requires vision to read printed materials and computer screens and hearing and speech to communicate in person and by telephone or radio.
