About The Role
Primary Purpose: Student Assistants are an important part of the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre. The Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre Student Assistants will support the Centre’s programs, services, and events. Nature of Work: Student Assistants are members of Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre team and report to the Indigenous Student Services Manager. The Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre is dedicated to supporting Indigenous student academic and personal success. The centre provides Métis, First Nations and Inuit students with individual, social, cultural, and academic supports through various programs, services and events held throughout the regular session. The centre does this through close collaboration with university and community partners. Hours will be shifted around the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre’s programming throughout the year. There may be times when Student Assistants will be asked to work events that are outside of regular working hours of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. Accountabilities: With direction from the Indigenous Student Services Manager, Student Assistants will: Assist with the Centre’s programs, services, and dedicated events throughout the year such as weekly mîciso - miitsho, soup and bannock, cultural and academic workshops, study nights, peer health support, wellness events, etc. Support the team in special events, such as Indigenous Achievement Week, New Indigenous Student Welcome, Indigenous Student Experience Day and the New Years Métis Partii. Student Assistants will help with setting up and taking down tables and chairs for events, setting up, and taking down AV, keeping the Centre tidy, and other assigned duties in maintaining the space. Assistants will help with administrative duties within the Centre, such as covering the front desk when the Administrative Coordinator is away, assisting with data entry, photocopying, faxing, and other office duties. Students with areas of interest and study may be asked to support specific programs as directed by the Indigenous Student Services Manager or designated staff member. Must be able to attend a mandatory training session and be willing to participate in additional training as required. Qualifications Education: Full-time undergraduate student at the University of Saskatchewan within first, second, third, or fourth years. Experience: Previous work or volunteer experience in an office setting or at the university is an asset. An understanding of the cultures and histories of the Indigenous communities (Métis, First Nations, and Inuit) of Saskatchewan, including current social, political, economic, environmental, and educational issues also considered assets. Skills: The successful candidate will: Demonstrate enthusiasm, initiative, and a willingness to contribute to the work of the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre. Demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain positive and professional working relationships with students, staff, faculty, Elders, community members, and other partners. Work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, leadership, public speaking, organization, and time-management skills. Demonstrate cultural competency and the ability to work respectfully within a student-centered environment. Have knowledge of, or a willingness to learn about, the programs and services offered by the Office of the Vice Provost, Indigenous Engagement and other student supports across campus. Be available to work a minimum of 10 hours and a maximum of 40 hours per month, based on operational and programming needs. Have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint. Be willing and able to assist with the physical setup and takedown of programming and events, including moving tables and chairs. Be willing and able to work occasional evenings and outside of regular Centre operating hours as required. Food Safe certification is considered an asset.
