The Middleware & Integration function enables Cardinal Health’s ability to operate as a connected, responsive, and customer-focused enterprise. Through Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) and modern integration platforms, this role helps ensure that critical business events and data flows are shared across the enterprise in near real time—enabling faster decisions, improved customer experiences, and resilient operations.

This role is accountable for designing, developing, administering, and continuously improving Kafka-based middleware capabilities. The role partners across application, architecture, data, and operations teams to ensure event streaming solutions are scalable, secure, data-safe, and aligned to Cardinal Health’s broader technology and business strategy.

Key Accountabilities

Apply advanced knowledge of Kafka, event streaming, integration patterns, and platform administration to deliver enterprise-scale middleware outcomes
Participate in and support development of standards, policies, and procedures that improve middleware governance, reliability, and adoption
Recommend new practices, processes, metrics, automation, and models that strengthen Kafka platform performance and operational maturity
Work on or lead complex initiatives involving Kafka producers, consumers, connectors, ksqlDB, KStreams, APIs, and custom implementations
Enable event-driven architecture adoption across teams by guiding correct patterns, event modeling, data integrity, and best practices
Provide solutions and guidance that may set precedent for enterprise middleware standards and reusable event-driven patterns
Independently determine methods for completing new platform work while aligning with enterprise architecture, governance, and security expectations
Partner with leads and stakeholders to ensure teams understand technology changes, platform impacts, and adoption expectations
Act as a mentor and subject matter expert to developers, engineers, and less experienced colleagues working with Kafka and event-driven solutions

Platform & Operational Responsibilities

Develop and implement solutions using Kafka.
Administer and improve use of Kafka across the organization including Kafka Producers, Kafka Consumers, Kafka Connect, ksqlDB, KStreams, and custom implementations.
Work with multiple teams to ensure best use of Kafka and data-safe event streaming.
Understand and apply event-driven architecture patterns and Kafka best practices. Enable development teams to do the same.
Assist developers in choosing correct patterns, event modeling, and ensuring data integrity.
Continuous learning to be a Confluent/Kafka subject matter expert.
Work with Kafka API's (e.g. metadata, metrics, admin) to provide pro-active insights and automation.
Perform regular reviews of performance data to ensure efficiency and resiliency.
Contribute regularly to event-driven patterns, best practices, and guidance.
Review feature release and change logs for Kafka, and other related components to ensure best use of these systems across the organization.
Work with lead to ensure all teams are aware of technology changes and impact.
Establish and maintain platform practices that support SDLC discipline, enhancement prioritization, change management, incident reduction, and problem resolution
Acquire a deep understanding of source and sink connector technical details for a variety of platforms including SAP, SAP HANA, Sales Force, PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, and others as required.

Required Knowledge & Experience

Strong understanding of SDLC, event-driven architecture, integration patterns, application design, and functional documentation
Hands-on experience with Kafka producers, consumers, connectors, ksqlDB, KStreams, and platform administration capabilities
Ability to translate business and technical requirements into reliable, scalable, and data-safe integration solutions
Working knowledge of infrastructure components, system interoperability, monitoring, metrics, automation, and operational resilience
Experience managing end-to-end integrations, transaction flows, source and sink connectors, and cross-platform dependencies
Exposure to platforms such as SAP, SAP HANA, Salesforce, PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, and related enterprise systems preferred

Qualifications

12- 16 years of experience, preferred
Bachelor's degree in related field preferred, or equivalent work experience, preferred
Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with experience working in Agile delivery environments
Ability to enforce platform standards and governance while enabling innovation, speed, and effective adoption
