Position Summary

Join a Nationally Recognized Cardiac Critical Care Team

WashU Medicine is seeking compassionate, highly motivated Advanced Practice Providers, including experienced Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNPs), Physician Assistants (PAs), and new graduate ACNPs and PAs, to join the multidisciplinary team in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. This is an exceptional opportunity to develop expertise in advanced cardiac critical care while working alongside nationally recognized physicians, APPs, nurses, and healthcare professionals dedicated to delivering world-class patient care.

  • Patient Population & Clinical Focus

The CICU provides care for critically ill patients with

  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Advanced heart failure
  • Acute myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • Complex valvular heart disease
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • High-risk pulmonary embolism
  • Post-cardiac arrest syndrome
  • Cardiac tamponade
  • LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) complications
  • Heart transplant patients and candidates

Providers work with advanced cardiac therapies, including

  • Invasive hemodynamic monitoring
  • Mechanical circulatory support devices

This position is ideal for providers who thrive in fast-paced settings and are passionate about critical care medicine. Successful candidates will possess strong clinical judgment, procedural skills, and the ability to manage complex patients with a high level of autonomy while collaborating closely with an experienced intensivist team.

Qualified candidates must hold a master's or doctoral degree as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. New graduates with acute care training are encouraged to apply and will have the opportunity to build a strong foundation in advanced cardiac critical care through mentorship and clinical collaboration.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care to include obtaining patient history, performing patient assessment via observation, interview, and examination.
  • Orders and interprets the full spectrum of diagnostic tests and procedures, including x-ray, electrocardiogram, hemodynamic monitoring, and laboratory tests.
  • Performs critical care ultrasound.
  • Provides counseling and education of patients and their families/caregivers concerning preventative health, treatment options, and community resources.
  • Formulates differential diagnoses and diagnoses.
  • Plans, implements, and directs treatment and management of patients with acute, critical, and/or complex conditions and evaluates outcomes of care.
  • Documents patient history, physical examination, assessment, and plans of care in patient medical record.
  • Manages health conditions via prescriptive authority or provides referral to other healthcare providers or community resources.
  • Performs diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification and state regulations.
  • Performs invasive procedures commonly utilized in the critical care setting.
  • Bills for professional services as permitted by collaborative practice agreement.
  • Supports 24/7 staffing model, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Schedules staff in various critical care settings, including telemedicine.
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with established clinic/hospital standards.
  • Works in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs as well as safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Participates in emergency and critical care situations, providing rapid assessment, stabilization, and initiation of treatment for the acutely ill or injured patients.
  • Regularly participates in quality improvement and process improvement activities centered on the goal of providing exceptional, evidence-based patient care. Serves as clinical expert and leadership consultant to nursing.

We are seeking a dedicated Critical Care APP Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our team. Below are additional requirements and information based on each role.

Required Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner

  • Master of Science in Nursing with emphasis in the Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or recent completion/anticipated completion of accredited ACNP program.
  • APRN licensure (or ability to successfully obtain licensure within three months of date of hire).
  • Active licensure to practice in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois, depending on location, and in good standing (or ability to obtain).
  • Certain/additional certifications or experience may be necessary based on area of specialty.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) within 30 days.

Physician Assistant

  • Graduate of PA program.
  • Current PA licensure to practice in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois, depending on location, (or ability to obtain within three months of date of hire).
  • Certain/additional certifications may be necessary based on area of specialty.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) within 30 days.

Salary Range

$114,200.00 - $205,400.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
