Summary of Job Duties

The Medical Laboratory Scientist I (Chemistry) performs routine and complex laboratory testing in the Chemistry department to assist physicians and healthcare providers in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This position is responsible for analyzing patient specimens, operating and maintaining laboratory instrumentation, ensuring quality control standards are met, and reporting accurate and timely test results in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Sciences OR an approved ASCP discipline (30 semester hours in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the Bachelor's).
  • ASCP or another accrediting agency certified or eligible (Certification must be obtained within one year of employment).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous clinical laboratory experience
  • ASCP certification

Job Requirements

  • Daily quality control review.
  • Organize and clean workspaces.
  • Ensure adequate supplies required for daily operations are available by restocking inventory, preparing reagents, rotating stock as required.
  • Communicate with clinics, physicians and external staff regarding sample integrity issues and/or critical values.
  • Set-up, maintain and operate lab automation systems used to process samples.
  • Operate, calibrate and maintain equipment used in analysis such as spectrophotometers, analyzers, microscopes, slide stainers, diluters, and computer controlled high volume analyzers, mixers, rotators, pipettes.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting on equipment used to perform testing.
  • Maintain equipment used for personal protection and safety such as eyewashes, safety showers, biohazard containers, hoods, chemical cabinets and personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain temperature dependent equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, incubators, water baths, heat blocks.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
