About The Role

The Protocol Integrator position is part of a collaborative IT team that is responsible for publishing JoVE's latest science articles to the web.

Main responsibilities include converting MS Word manuscripts into HTML and CSS marked-up pages ready for our website, performing Quality-of-Service to be sure content is accurate, and using XML techniques to submit manuscript information to other public science indexes. The position requires great attention to detail, and the idea candidate will have a working knowledge of HTML, CSS and XML.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare science manuscripts in Microsoft Word, including converting from .doc to .docx and removing formatting errors
  • Transfer all manuscript text into our digital publication tools to prepare them for release
  • Add appropriate HTML and CSS tags to manuscripts, so that the articles are properly displayed on the web
  • Cross-check author information, institution information and references for errors
  • Work with character entities, especially science related Greek characters, and be sure they display properly
  • Format, validate and correct XML versions of manuscripts, so that they can be submitted to PubMed Central, an online database of scientific abstracts and references
  • Prepare graphics used in manuscripts so that they are properly sized and displayed on the web
  • A Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working with HTML and CSS is preferred. This includes working with things like nested lists, tables, and inline/block elements
  • An understanding of XML structure and usage is required
  • Experience using basic image editing and formatting techniques
  • Knowledge of HTML entities, mathematical notations and Greek characters is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Quick learner, with effective problem-solving skills, and ability to find solutions to new and complex issues
  • Detail oriented, organized, and able to keep track of multiple projects and issues independently
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office environment
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
