About The Role

The Controls Field Engineer supports the availability, reliability, and day-to-day operation of EPMS, BMS, and PLC-based control systems across assigned data center sites within a defined region.

This role is field-forward and operationally grounded, serving as the on-site, regional technical resource for controls system health, troubleshooting, documentation, and commissioning.

The Field Controls Engineer works closely with Operational Controls Systems, Site Operations, Regional Operations Directors (RODs), and IT Operations teams to ensure control systems accurately represent electrical and mechanical infrastructure, remain stable and secure, and support 24×7 mission critical operations.

Key Responsibilities

Controls Systems Operations & Support

  • Support the availability and reliability of EPMS, BMS, and associated control systems across assigned sites.
  • Perform routine system checks, alarm reviews, and health validations to ensure data accuracy and system stability.
  • Troubleshoot controls-related issues across software, network, and field device layers.
  • Execute approved changes, patches, and minor upgrades under established change management processes.
  • Maintain backups, configuration records, and system access controls.

Field Engineering & Commissioning Support

  • Support commissioning, cutovers, energizations, and retrofits from a controls perspective.
  • Perform point-to-point checks, basic logic validation, and graphics verification.‑to‑point checks, basic logic validation, and graphics verification.
  • Assist with meter, relay, sensor, and controller integration and validation.

Electrical & Systems Awareness

  • Read and interpret one-line diagrams, electrical schematics, and control drawings.
  • Validate that EPMS/BMS hierarchies reflect real-world electrical and mechanical configurations.
  • Partner with electrical and mechanical SMEs to correct discrepancies and improve monitoring fidelity.

Documentation & Procedures

  • Create and maintain SOPs, MOPs, EOPs, control narratives, and system diagrams as assigned.
  • Ensure system inventories, naming conventions, and point mappings remain accurate.
  • Contribute to regional standards for alarms, graphics, and documentation.

Cross-Functional Coordination‑Functional Coordination

  • Act as a technical liaison between Operations Controls Systems, Site Operations, and IT Operations.
  • Coordinate troubleshooting efforts that span controls software, networking, and physical infrastructure.
  • Work with IT Ops on server hosting, virtualization, network connectivity, and security requirements related to controls systems.

Regional Coverage & On-Call

  • Support a defined geographic region (e.g., CHI, CIN, DFW, PHX, PNW).
  • Participate in on-call rotations for controls-related incidents.
  • Travel up to ~25% to support commissioning, outages, and regional projects.

Required Qualifications

  • 4–6+ years of experience in industrial controls, facilities automation, or mission critical environments (data center experience preferred).‑critical environments (data center experience preferred).
  • Hands‑on experience supporting EPMS, BMS, or BAS platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior data center experience supporting 24×7 operations.
  • Commissioning or startup experience in electrical or mechanical control systems.
  • Experience with platforms such as Ignition, Niagara, ALC, Schneider, Eaton, or similar.
  • Comfort working at the intersection of software, networking, and physical infrastructure.
