Airport Duty Officer

Bermuda Skyport Corporation Limited (“Skyport”), the operators of the L.F. Wade International Airport and developers of its award-winning and state-of-the-art passenger terminal, is seeking an energetic Airport Duty Officer to join our team.

Working under the direction of the Airport Operations Manager, the Airport Duty Officer will be responsible for responding to operational and emergency issues and coordinating resolution and activities required in managing the airport facilities and day-to-day operations as outlined in the Airport Operational Manual (AOM).

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Monitor airport and terminal activities “on the ground/in the terminal,” and take appropriate steps to mitigate any safety, security, or other issues that may arise.
• A practical understanding of emergency and recovery procedures as noted in the Airport Emergency Plan (AEP); responsible for liaising with emergency services during exercises and real emergency situations.
• Conducts daily airport, airfield, and facility inspections, using defined checklists and the Skyport Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
• Establishes and builds strong working relationships with all terminal tenants, including security agencies, airlines, and government agencies.
• Responds to all events in the terminal, including maintenance issues, vendor requests, security breaches, and guest service considerations.
• Responds to all incidents on the aprons associated with airport safety, operational efficiency, and security.
• Inspects the Aerodrome during each shift and assists with the enforcement of Airside Vehicle Operating Permit (AVOP) system, advising offending individuals of any violations.
• Reports regulatory non-compliance based on established ICAO, BCAA and ASSI requirements to ensure immediate corrective action is taken to support safety and security.
• Initial response to all emergency or abnormal events that occur after normal Skyport working hours and on holidays or the weekend.
• Detailed understanding of aircraft operations and turnaround processes.
• Manages the Airport Management System (AMS) on a daily basis.
• Takes action to ensure all systems, facilities, and services are being provided in an effective way to ensure safety, efficiency and a high level of service to the travelling public, airlines, tenants and other Airport stakeholders.
• Directs and provides change management when issues of safety and security are experienced during duty shifts where the Skyport Accountable Manager, Director of Operations or the Head of Safety, are not available for decisions.
• Supports the Skyport policies on fiscal accountability to include efferent management of the Duty Officer vehicle, emergency supplies and equipment, radios, computer tablets and cell phones.

Required Qualification, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Ability to be self-motivated and work under minimal supervision
• Ability to handle multiple tasks in a high-pressure and demanding work environment
• Ability to manage the identified Responsibility, Authority and Accountability (RAA) associate with detail duty shifts or “call-outs”.
• Ability to observe safety and security events and determine points of action or mitigation to reduce risk and impacts to personnel, equipment, and the environment.
• Understanding of airport operational processes, aviation security, and public health and safety regulations.
• Possess a strong knowledge and understanding of a dynamic airport operational environment, which includes the inter-relationship between airlines, ground services, the regulator and other stakeholders
• Project leadership, confidence understanding, and determined application of the Skyport Airport Emergency Plan.
• Demonstrate skills as a good listener, problem solver, able to make sound judgement and ability to remain focused during emergency situations.
• Good writing and oral communication skills with ability to encourage or motivate others to operational or security compliance to standards outlined in the AOM.
• Skills in talking and operational control of radio communication at the airport related to AVOP, ATC and other communications
• Understanding of Airfield Operations including knowledge of Bird and Wildlife Management at an Aerodrome
• The ability to work at least ten (10) hours per shift per day with an understanding of the potential of extended hours greater than the normal shift based on air carrier delays or emergency diversions (mechanical or medical) when the airport is closed.
