Department: Regional Center for Public Safety Excellence
General Statement of Job
The Public Safety Compliance Specialist provides administrative and technical support to Dean, Department Chair for Public Safety Programs and the staff at the Regional Center for Public Safety Excellence by performing the following essential duties and other duties as assigned.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Provides administrative and technical support and assistance to the Dean, Department Chair for Public Safety Programs and the staff at the RCPSE for Continuing Education trainings and courses.
- Prepares memos, letters, forms, reports and other routine correspondence related to compliance for public safety programs and trainings.
- Facilitates communications, plans and follow-ups on administrative and technical matters related to compliance for public safety programs and trainings.
- Interacts with and provides customer service to students, staff, and the public in a positive manner and answers questions regarding matters related to public safety trainings and compliance requirements.
- Responds to student (or potential student) inquiries and exercises sound judgment in referral of inquiries to appropriate staff.
- Processes administrative and technical matters related to compliance for Public Safety programs and trainings.
- Assists with compiling, tracking, and submitting reports and documents related to the public safety programs and trainings.
- Facilitates and supports projects and activities with internal and external departments, with some weekend and evening work required to meet strict deadlines.
- Creates and maintains confidential and computerized student files, records, and documents.
- Assists potential students throughout the entire intake process of the Police Academy, the Fire Academy, the Jailer Academy, the Telecommunication courses, and any other partnership established by the College.
- Processes information and reports with Pharr PD Training Coordinator related to the academy license.
- Processes necessary reports and documents related to any Public Safety Programs, as required.
- Conducts college tours to internal and external stakeholders.
- Maintains knowledge of the College's programs, policies, procedures, academic standards, admissions process, entrance tests, degree plans, and courses.
- Assists with the Completion Ceremonies for the Police and Fire Academies.
- Verifies students' registry and payment and ensures compliance of all the state-funded courses.
- Reconciles third-party contracts and agreements and prepares for billing.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- Associate's Degree or a minimum of 60 earned college hours required.
- At least one (1) year of work experience in a related work setting and duties required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
- Knowledge of enterprise systems; e.g. Banner.
- Good critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
- Bilingual, English/Spanish, preferred.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
- Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
- Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
- Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, customers or employees of organization.
- Ability to apply practical understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized and non-standardized situations.
Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
- All applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.

- Must have a valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance.
Physical Requirements
- Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
- Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
- Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

- Standing particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
- Mobility to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
