We are actively hiring for a Senior Vice President, Chief Actuary .

Role Summary

The Senior Vice President, Chief Actuary is the enterprise leader for actuarial strategy, judgment, and execution across pricing, reserving, claims analytics, and pricing design. The role serves as an Appointed Actuary for the organization’s personal and commercial lines businesses and is accountable for providing an independent view of reserve adequacy, advancing rate adequacy and profitable growth, and translating emerging loss, competitive, regulatory, and market dynamics into clear enterprise action.

This executive leads the actuarial function supporting a multibillion-dollar personal lines portfolio across 23 states and the District of Columbia and a national commercial lines portfolio through Mobilitas. The role leads enterprise pricing and reserving governance, regularly engages the Board, CEO, and Executive Leadership Team, and partners closely with State Management, Commercial, Product Development and Underwriting, Claims, Finance, Risk Management, Reinsurance, Data Science, Strategy, Marketing, Distribution, Policyholder Service, Business Architecture, Legal, and Technology.

Success requires a combination of deep actuarial expertise, commercial judgment, enterprise leadership, and the ability to communicate complex analysis in clear business terms. The Chief Actuary is expected to constructively challenge assumptions, make decisions under uncertainty, and build a modern actuarial organization that improves both financial outcomes and organizational decision-making.

Key Accountabilities

Enterprise Actuarial Strategy and Leadership

  • Sets the vision, strategy, and three- to five-year roadmap for the actuarial function, aligning priorities, talent, technology, and investment with enterprise strategy and risk appetite.
  • Provides an integrated actuarial perspective across pricing, reserving, claims analytics, product economics, forecasting, catastrophe risk, and emerging commercial exposures.
  • Leads enterprise pricing and reserving committees and ensures that actuarial insights are timely, decision-oriented, and understood by senior leaders across the company.
  • Establishes clear performance measures for actuarial quality, speed, business impact, control effectiveness, stakeholder partnership, and talent health.

Reserving and Appointed Actuary Responsibilities

  • Serves as Appointed Actuary for personal and commercial lines, providing an independent and well-supported assessment of reserve adequacy through the Statement of Actuarial Opinion and related communications to senior management and the Board.
  • Owns the reserving strategy, governance, methods, assumptions, documentation, controls, and range-of-reasonable-estimate framework in accordance with applicable actuarial standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures management understands reserve uncertainty, key sensitivities, emerging developments, and implications for earnings, capital, reinsurance, and business actions.
  • Partners with Finance, Claims, Risk Management, Internal Audit, Legal, and Reinsurance to maintain a credible and transparent view of the company’s liabilities and financial position.

Pricing, Product, and Portfolio Economics

  • Develops the enterprise pricing strategy, including target market segments, rate adequacy, competitive positioning, catastrophe pricing, and pricing innovation, in close partnership with State Management, Product, Data Science, Strategy, Marketing, Distribution, Finance, and Technology.
  • Leads the design, development, validation, and deployment of next-generation pricing algorithms and rating factors that improve risk differentiation, member relevance, regulatory defensibility, and long-term portfolio economics.
  • Creates a strong competitive intelligence capability that evaluates market pricing, product design, underwriting actions, and competitor behavior and translates that intelligence into state-, product-, and segment-level actions.
  • Ensures in-market pricing plans are actively monitored and adjusted based on actual performance, changing loss costs, market conditions, customer behavior, operational impacts, and the economics of the broader customer relationship.
  • Partners with state Departments of Insurance and Legal to secure timely, well-supported regulatory approvals and with Product and Technology to translate actuarial decisions into accurate, high-quality implementation.

Claims Analytics, Loss Trends, and Financial Forecasting

  • Builds an integrated and forward-looking view of frequency, severity, inflation, litigation, catastrophe, climate, repair, medical, behavioral, and other loss-cost drivers using company, industry, and external data.
  • Leads claims analytics that identifies actionable opportunities to improve claims outcomes, reduce leakage, influence product or underwriting decisions, and strengthen enterprise loss performance.
  • Produces credible loss ratio forecasts and actuarial inputs for the enterprise financial plan, clearly articulating assumptions, risks, ranges, and the actions required to achieve target outcomes.
  • Creates mechanisms to rapidly detect, investigate, and communicate emerging trends so that leaders can act before those trends are fully reflected in reported results.

Commercial Lines Actuarial Leadership

  • Serves as Chief Actuary for Mobilitas and continues to mature the commercial actuarial capability, including pricing, reserving, trend analysis, forecasting, and portfolio monitoring.
  • Develops fit-for-purpose actuarial views for complex commercial auto, large-account, blanket-transfer, gig-economy, and other emerging mobility exposures, while maintaining consistent enterprise governance and standards.
  • Supports the evaluation, design, pricing, and ongoing management of new products, coverages, partnerships, and large accounts, with clear articulation of risk, uncertainty, capital implications, and return expectations.
  • Builds a scalable commercial actuarial operating model and talent pipeline capable of supporting continued growth and increasing product and account complexity.

Advancing Actuarial in the Age of AI

  • Defines and executes an actuarial AI and advanced analytics strategy that improves pricing, reserving, claims analytics, forecasting, competitive intelligence, and the productivity of actuarial workflows.
  • Modernizes the actuarial toolset and operating model by combining sound actuarial judgment with machine learning, generative AI, automation, modern data platforms, and fit-for-purpose vendor capabilities.
  • Establishes disciplined governance for AI-enabled actuarial models and decisions, including data quality, validation, documentation, explainability, fairness, privacy, change control, performance monitoring, human accountability, and compliance with actuarial and regulatory standards.
  • Partners with Data Science, Technology, Legal, Compliance, Risk, Product, and business leaders to move high-value use cases from experimentation to reliable production while maintaining clear ownership and controls.
  • Redesigns work so automation handles repeatable analysis and documentation, allowing actuaries to spend more time on judgment, scenario analysis, business partnership, innovation, and strategic decision support.
  • Builds AI fluency across the actuarial organization, evolves roles and career paths, and develops leaders who can responsibly apply new methods without compromising professional standards or independent actuarial judgment.
  • Maintains an external perspective on emerging technologies, regulation, industry practices, and talent models and converts relevant developments into a practical roadmap for CSAA Insurance Group.

Governance, Regulatory, and External Leadership

  • Maintains high standards of actuarial governance, professional practice, model risk management, documentation, peer review, and control effectiveness across all actuarial work products.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable Actuarial Standards of Practice, U.S. Qualification Standards, NAIC requirements, state regulations, and company policies.
  • Communicates clearly and credibly with the Board, CEO, Executive Leadership Team, regulators, auditors, rating agencies, club partners, and other external stakeholders.
  • Represents CSAA Insurance Group on external boards and industry forums, including HLDI/IIHS and other relevant organizations, and brings external insight back into company strategy and practice.

Talent, Organization, and Culture

  • Builds and sustains a high-performing, highly engaged actuarial organization with clear accountabilities, strong succession plans, and leaders capable of taking on broader enterprise responsibility.
  • Creates a culture of analytical curiosity, constructive challenge, professional integrity, speed, pride of work product, continuous learning, and practical business impact.
  • Develops actuarial and business capabilities across the team, including executive communication, product and market knowledge, technology fluency, and cross-functional leadership.
  • Maintains a strong actuarial talent pipeline through disciplined recruiting, development, credentialing support, rotations, coaching, and retention.

Measures of Success

  • Reserves are credible, transparent, appropriately governed, and well understood by management and the Board.
  • Pricing actions support rate adequacy, disciplined profitable growth, competitive relevance, and regulatory credibility across personal and commercial lines.
  • Emerging loss trends are identified early and translated into coordinated, measurable actions across Claims, Product, Underwriting, Pricing, and State Management.
  • Actuarial forecasts and scenarios improve enterprise planning, capital decisions, and management of earnings volatility.
  • AI, advanced analytics, and automation materially improve actuarial quality, speed, insight, and productivity without weakening controls or professional judgment.
