About The Role

The role – what you’ll do

Barr is seeking a Structural Engineer to join our Minneapolis team. In this hybrid role, you will support our Structural Engineering group by providing design and technical expertise for heavy industrial sites such as power plants, manufacturing, refinery, and mining facilities. You’ll work on multidisciplinary project teams to perform foundation and structural analysis, field inspection and field data collection, develop plans and specifications, write technical reports, and support construction related activities such as responding to field questions and reviewing submittals. This position may include short-term travel for field assignments.

Your impact – key responsibilities

  • Technical knowledge: engineering calculations and modeling for a variety of industrial and energy-related structures, including steel and reinforced concrete structures, walls, and foundations.
  • Project Support: project management, preparing engineering drawings, technical specifications, and design documentation. Contribute to project reports and help develop schedules and cost estimates for engineering solutions. Monitor and manage structural teams to meet schedule and budget commitments. Support developing junior team members to learn new skills and apply them to industrial facility structural challenges.
  • Fieldwork: participate in site visits and inspections to review and document existing conditions, observe construction activities, and ensure compliance with design intent.
  • Software: use word processing, spreadsheet, and structural engineering software (AutoCAD, Revit, Advanced Steel, MathCAD, Staad, Risa, IDEA Statica) to support project tasks and team collaboration.
  • Team collaboration and team development: work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and project managers while developing your skillset in a professional consulting environment. Support multidisciplinary project teams by providing senior leadership, mentoring other staff, and communicating with other project leaders.

About the opportunity

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Minneapolis, Minnesota, office.
  • Travel expectation: willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (up to 30% travel and fieldwork possible on occasion; project needs will vary).
  • Work environment: ability to work in locations that may feature rough terrain typical of construction, manufacturing, or rural outdoor sites with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you – required core competencies

  • Education: bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a structural emphasis (including structural analysis and steel and concrete design).
  • Experience: 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) certified or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Software: experience with AutoCAD, Excel, Revit, STAAD Pro, IDEA Statica, Advanced Steel, RISA 3D, or MathCAD.
  • Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • 15+ years of related work experience
  • Licensed Structural Engineer (SE)
  • Experience with 3D software such as Revit
  • Strong technical skills in a wide range of structural analysis and design
  • Experience in the consulting industry
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with teams of multiple disciplines
  • Demonstrated project organization and management skills

Compensation : Anticipated range of $115,000–$140,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salary) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
