Job Summary

A two-year, private foundation postdoctoral fellowship is available at the Vaccine and Immunotherapy Center, Massachusetts General Hospital. The fellowship would focus on translational medical research aimed at developing novel therapeutic approaches for type 1 diabetes, with a particular emphasis on gene and cell therapies, immunomodulation and transplant biology.

About the Vaccine and Immunotherapy Center

The mission of the Vaccine and Immunotherapy Center (VIC) at Massachusetts General Hospital is to accelerate the development of novel, broadly applicable vaccines and immunotherapies aimed at eradicating cancer, infectious diseases, and type I diabetes. VIC accomplishes this by:

  • Bringing together scientists, physicians and business leaders experienced in transforming promising laboratory discoveries into therapies providing improved patient treatment.
  • Funding selected projects and providing project management, technological transfer and practical assistance to ensure project success.
  • Identifying high yield translational medical research with a 2-3 year horizon for implementation in patients.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

The individual will work in a creative and multidisciplinary team with other scientists on novel designs for immunomodulatory and cell-gene therapies for type I diabetes. Studies will involve therapeutic studies in established mouse models of disease and application of immunologic tools to define key mechanisms of action in graft immune protection. The fellow will be directly responsible for the conduct of experiments and will work with a team in analysis of data. Projects will involve work with outside academic and industry collaborators.

Essential Requirements

  • PhD in Biology, Immunology, Biochemistry, or a related field
  • Strong publication record and demonstrated ability to write funding proposals.
  • Understanding/knowledge of gene delivery systems, transplant tolerance and transplant biology
  • Passionate and curious to advance therapies from preclinical to clinical stage
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills

Professional Skills & Experience

  • Careful documentation of research plan, execution and data collection
  • Experimental design, animal model development and data analysis
  • Experience with animal handling (IV, IP and SQ injections), tissue processing and primary cell culture.
  • Experience with functional assays such as cytotoxicity assays, ELISPOT, ELISA and cytokine release assays.
  • Experience in working with pancreatic islet cells, T cells, other immune cells, immunological techniques, multicolor flow cytometry is desirable.
  • Experience in vivo gene delivery strategies, particularly using non-viral gene delivery platforms (e.g., lipid-based carriers and LNPs), as well as AAV-based approaches and imaging systems are a plus.
  • Experience with basic molecular biology techniques, including qPCR and Western blot.

  • The compensation range for this role is between $70,000-$71,500.
  • Final compensation will be determined based on years of relevant experience, skills, and internal equity.
