About The Role

Staff Archaeologist III – Lab Analyst, Lithic Specialist

Braun Intertec is seeking a Staff Archaeologist III, Lab Analyst, based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to serve as a Lithic Specialist supporting cultural resources projects throughout the Southeastern United States. This laboratory-focused position is responsible for leading lithic analysis, interpretation, and documentation of archaeological collections, while supporting artifact processing, reporting, and curation. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with Southeastern U.S. archaeological materials and will provide technical expertise, maintain high-quality artifact data, and mentor junior laboratory staff.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead lithic analysis, including artifact identification, classification, technology, raw material, and chronological or cultural interpretation.
  • Perform and at times oversee laboratory processing, cataloging, documentation, quality control, and preparation of artifacts and records for curation.
  • Maintain lithic comparative collections and reference materials to support consistent analysis.
  • Support reports and deliverables with artifact tables, lithic analysis sections, methods, summaries, artifact photography, and documentation.
  • Provide guidance and training to Staff Archaeologists I–II and laboratory personnel on artifact processing with emphasis on lithic identification and analysis.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Anthropology, Archaeology, Museum Studies, or a closely related field.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Museum Studies, or a closely related field.

Experience and/or Training

  • Typically 3+ years of archaeological experience, including laboratory experience.
  • CRM experience and archaeological laboratory experience in the Southeastern United States.
  • Demonstrated specialization or strong experience in lithic analysis, preferably with Southeastern U.S. archaeological materials.
  • Knowledge of lithic technology, artifact classification, material culture, and archaeological reference literature.
  • Experience developing or maintaining lithic comparative collections.

Licenses/Certificates: Valid driver’s license. Registered Archaeologist (RA) preferred.

  • Ability to complete artifact processing, cataloging, analysis, data management, quality control, and curation tasks accurately.
  • Ability to prepare technical content, artifact tables, analysis summaries, and supporting report documentation.
  • Strong organization, communication, and time management skills for laboratory priorities and deadlines.

Technology/Equipment

  • Microsoft Office, Adobe products, databases, artifact photography equipment, and archaeological laboratory tools and equipment.

Compensation Range

$55,000.00 - $82,000.00
