Job Summary

A Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is responsible for successful implementation of the regional field-based component of the Medical Affairs Therapeutic Area (TA) Strategic Plan in collaboration with the MSL team and the Director, Oncology Medical Affairs. The MSL, Oncology is a disease state and product expert, responsible for developing and maintaining professional relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOL) in Ontario as they relate to Eisai's products. The candidate in this position will prepare and give presentations of medical/clinical data on Eisai products to healthcare professionals, including individual physicians, researchers, medical and pharmacy directors, hospital decision makers, formulary committees, pharmacists, and others. The impact that a MSL will have to the organization include the following:

As representatives of Eisai, a MSL will communicate key information about Eisai, the company and its hhc (human health care) mission; Provide key scientific and clinical information about Eisai's products; provide a conduit for communication between Eisai Research and the medical community regarding ideas for future research with Eisai's products; Support Marketing, Sales, Market Access, and Regulatory Affairs teams by providing in-depth scientific, clinical and educational support as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Work with key professionals in the area of Oncology at the regional level, educating key healthcare professionals with current medical, scientific and pharmacoeconomic information on Eisai's products and therapeutic areas. Increase the awareness of Eisai and its marketed products allowing the key healthcare professionals to make informed therapeutic decisions via one-on-one scientific exchange.
  • Developing working relationships with healthcare professionals who are influencers and opinion leaders within their area of expertise.
  • Work with investigators to facilitate the process for clinical trials (both Eisai sponsored and investigator-sponsored studies). Expedite the development and collection of quality data for Eisai pipeline compounds and marketed products.
  • Assist in the preparation and execution of Regional Advisory Board meetings for Eisai's marketed products, including making presentations, and leading interactive discussion groups. Provide resource for presenting medical information; allowing Eisai to glean information from physicians about the utility of our products and how they compare in the marketplace, through a learned intermediary. Contribute to the development of the Oncology Medical strategic plan.
  • Review and evaluate scientific publications, and develop, in collaboration with Medical, Market Access, and Marketing teams, key information summaries for Sales Reps and other internal stakeholders. Respond in collaboration with Medical Services – Medical information to unsolicited requests for scientific information received directly from customers or conveyed through the Sales Reps.

Scope Measures

  • Prioritizing the tasks at hand to be able to manage multiple TA activities and meet the needs at the national/regional/local levels. Spending most of time in the field, MSLs must be able to work autonomously, seeking out key Eisai customers, work out schedules for visiting clients, such as a KOL. The candidates have to demonstrate the ability to carry out high quality work without daily supervision from their manager.
  • When a question from the field is beyond the knowledge or expertise of the MSL, identifying the correct contact person to handle that question; work closely with Director, Oncology Medical Affairs and Eisai Medical Services - Medical Information for updates, clarifications on newly generated medical information for our marketed products.
  • Must facilitate productive collaborations with a broad group of stakeholders, including Medical Affairs, cross-functional colleagues, KOLs and other healthcare professionals and ensure all MSL activities are non-promotional in nature, accomplished within boundaries established by regulatory and legal compliance and are in accordance with company policies and sound ethical practices.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required

Must Have

  • A post-graduate degree in medical/biosciences (e.g. M.D., PhD, PharmD, MSc)
  • Previous MSL experience
  • An independent self-starter with the ability to work effectively both alone and with cross-functional teams
  • Strong broad based scientific and pharmaceutical knowledge as well as excellent presentation and teaching skills
  • Strong overall written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities within established timelines and budgets.
  • Solid understanding of the pharmaceutical corporate environment, and the contribution provided by Medical and Scientific Affairs
  • Understanding of local regulations and Innovative Medicines Canada Code of Ethical Practices
  • Ability to manage a frequent travel schedule, with 25-40% overnight travel
