About The Role

Basic Purpose

Provides a wide range of professional legal support services to attorneys in the form of legal research, summarizing legal documents, providing litigation and pre-trial discovery support, analyzing data, drafting of legal and business communications. Primary focus will be on state and federal regulatory forums. Provides support to the in-house regulatory attorneys. Works in a professional environment and has occasional contact with the public, governmental agencies and regulatory agencies, law firms, and management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assists attorney(s) in research, tracking and preparation of legal documents

Performs records, legal and factual research. Prepares regulatory filings for submission to the PUCN and FERC.

Identifies relevant judicial decisions, statutes, legal articles, codes and other pertinent material.

Prepares correspondence, written reports and helps prepare legal arguments, applications,

declarations, motions and litigation strategy.

Drafts legal documents including pleadings, regulatory documents, data requests, data request responses, testimony, reports, presentations, discovery, briefs, appeals, contracts and legal agreements.

Checks legal forms, exhibits and documents for accuracy. Organizes, analyzes, cross-checks and validates information as needed.

Assists the lawyers during hearings, trials and arbitrations.

Provides training, oversight, and mentoring of secretarial position, ensuring compliance with

processes. Provides backup secretarial support as needed.

Locates and communicates with witnesses, including identification of witnesses, preparation of

questions/issues to be addressed in interviews and handling witness interviews as assigned.

Maintains file system for legal documents, and case calendars.

Organizes and tracks regulatory filings and physical files.

Helps coordinate subpoena delivery and other law-office activities.

Performs Records Coordinator duties in compliance with corporate records retention policies.

Backup management of the Legal Hold process including preparation and issuance of notices, maintenance of database, coordination with key stakeholders and performance of searches.

Reviews and monitors new and updated regulations. Communicates impacts as appropriate.

Ensures all compliance aspects of position are known and followed; understands and complies with all policies, codes and regulations applicable to position and company.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Education, Skills, and Environment

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school and 2 or more years of paralegal experience.
  • Candidates that do not possess a bachelor’s degree must have six years of paralegal experience.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Demonstrated knowledge of

  • Nevada and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and/or PUCN, FERC guidelines.
  • Applicable legal principles, legal research techniques, legal terminology, and knowledge of applicable government regulations.
  • Legal research on Westlaw or Lexis-Nexis, PACER and the internet.

Demonstrated skill such as

Detail oriented, research, analytical, critical thinking, planning, information monitoring, time management, communications, decision making, presentation, human relations, and organizational skills.

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.

Equipment and Applications

PCs, MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams, database software, PACER and Westlaw/Lexis-Nexis.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

General office environment. No special physical demands required.
