About The Role

 

The Due Diligence Senior Specialist provides subject matter expertise through advice and support to inform and enable decision-making to Diamond Trading, and the broader De Beers Group through the Ethical and Sustainable Initiatives Team and other Business Units (BUs). The role ensures the business meets its regulatory and legislative requirements regarding the identification and verification of the identity of counterparties. The role also offers extraordinary in-depth investigation into a variety of red flag issues that may be subject to review by senior leadership, external legal counsel and regulatory authorities. The Due Diligence Senior Specialist cascades information and business intelligence to multiple BUs and coordinates and facilitates De Beers Group access to appropriate third-party due diligence service providers.  

The role sits within the Ethical Initiatives team closely coordinating with the Best Practice Principles and Pipeline Integrity teams, and Head of Compliance to maintain the disclosure of counterparties and develop capabilities of the BPP SMART System.

Please note: this is a 12 month fixed term contract.

Leading Implementation of the Due Diligence Programme

  • Lead and accountable for ongoing monitoring and red flag management of platforms, such as LSEG’s World Check One for counterparty risk issues; specifically:
  • Timely investigations of potential red flags, elimination of false positives; and,
  • Escalation of issues that cannot be dismissed based on publicly available information to the appropriate business unit in accordance with set processes and policies.
  • Management of disclosure data on the BPP SMART System:
  • Additions: Review and approval of new disclosures made by Sightholders onto the BPP SMART System – including full documentation review and follow-ups as required.
  • Removal: Review, evidence gathering and approval of removal/inactivation requests made by Sightholders pertaining to information held on the BPP SMART System.
  • Structuring & trouble shooting: Assisting Sightholders in structuring and remedial actions required on the BPP SMART System to meet De Beers regulatory compliance requirements
  • Lead and responsible for annual bespoke internal due diligence programme/review.
  • Selection and recommendation of Sightholders for inclusion in Checks to the FIA Working Group.
  • Public record research of disclosed Sightholder Groups & identification of undisclosed entities and individuals who may fall within the scope of De Beers disclosure requirements.
  • Identification of adverse information relating to Sightholder entities and key individuals & escalation.
  • Delivery of Finding reports to Sightholders, assistance and monitoring of remedial action.
  • Manage the Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) process for Diamond Trading –
  • Recommending the selection of 5-6 High-Risk Sightholders per annum to the FIA Working Group.
  • Scoping and communicating client data sensitively to the third-party for proposals & due diligence review.
  • Review of third-party proposals & recommendation for selection to the FIA Working Group.
  • Review & analysis of third-party produced EDD reports
  • Reporting of EDD outcomes to the FIA Working Group
  • Management of remedial actions required with Sightholders and further escalation if required.
  • Dissemination of relevant Sightholder Group changes to relevant BUs including: Legal, Product Planning, Diamond Consultants, etc.,

Leading Issue Specific Investigations

  • Lead and accountable for extraordinary investigations as required by De Beers Group handling commercially sensitive matters and reporting findings to relevant stakeholders including senior management.

Oversee support for Sight Management & Shipping

  • Responsible for compilation and distribution of Sight Administration reports using data stored on the BPP SMART System including – Possible Supply Locations (addresses eligible to receive shipment of Rough Goods from Sight) and Pre-Approved IP Usage Report (Sightholder Entities eligible to use Sightholder IP issued per Sight)
  • At request of Sight Management - leading review of addresses requested for shipment of Sight Goods that do not appear in these reports, and remediation of issues to ensure expedient shipment aligned with De Beers compliance and regulatory requirements
  • Drafting of Extraordinary Shipping Agreement proposals

Leading (or in the case of third-party service access, coordinating) Ad Hoc Due Diligence requests for De Beers Group  

  • Management of ‘Ad Hoc’ due diligence requests from various BUs and Joint-Ventures (JVs).
  • Example Work includes:
  • Due Diligence review of new board appointees to JVs (for example - Debcore);
  • Due Diligence scoping & third-party service provider assistance for prospective loan & business partnerships in US.
  • Assisting Supply Chain when service provider platforms are not well suited to new jurisdictions/structures.
  • Investigation of adverse reports (E.g., sanctions related reports).
  • Confirmation of Sightholder composition & scope for business units including Pricing Development & Product Planning.

Leading & Driving – Engagement with Third-Party Due Diligence service providers

  • Management of ongoing relationships with suppliers, including cost monitoring and negotiations.
  • Cultivation of new relationships with alternative suppliers.
  • Management of administration and user access for other BUs to subscription services including LSEG’s World-Check One and Dun & Bradstreet. Including user reviews, user access management and issue remediation.

Coordinating and Leading ( on Disclosure related matters) - IT Management/BPP SMART System development

  • SMART System maintenance in partnership with IT provider NESS including: Response to user feedback or errors, Integration of new requirements as necessary (contractual/legal/risk) e.g., FIA Namibia disclosure expansion, Creation and Testing of User Stories & new functionality.
  • Creation of new training materials and communication to Sightholders & other SMART System users.

Team Management

  • Responsible for one direct report, overseeing their priorities and key work responsibilities, advocating for their opportunities and career development.
  • Allocating and delegating work appropriately, including ad hoc special projects, being accountable for the delivery of their role and responsibilities.
  • Providing training and support to ensure their professional development and role fulfilment and recommending external training opportunities and courses to further develop their skills and understanding of the regulatory environment.

 

  • Degree or professional qualification in a relevant discipline is essential.
  • High levels of integrity, discretion, judgement and ethical decision making is mandatory.
  • Ability to interpret complex legal and financial scenarios to understand risk and regulatory consequences for De Beers Group in managing its risk profile.
  • Experience of managing external providers to provide solutions for De Beers Group.  
  • Relevant work experience in the field and diamond industry is preferable.
  • Ability to anticipate emerging industry trends, regulatory changes and stakeholder expectations and translate them into proactive strategies.
  • Expert Awareness of regulatory landscape, including sanctions, tariffs, Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC), Anti-Money Laundering (AML) legislation and enforcement trends.
  • Awareness of the diamond/luxury jewellery industry.
  • Able to work well in relative isolation, but with strong collaborative drive to share high-priority information sensitively and as appropriate.

  • Willingness to travel internationally for stakeholder engagements.
  • Willingness to pursue sector specific education and qualifications to keep pace with changing regulatory environment.
