About The Role
Baystate Health is seeking a Respiratory Therapist to join our Respiratory Care team at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, the Respiratory Therapist performs a variety of duties involving all aspects of respiratory care for patients ranging from infants to adults. The team works closely with patients, nurses, physicians, therapists, and other members of the healthcare team to provide safe, effective, and compassionate respiratory care.
This per diem opportunity offers flexible scheduling and the opportunity to provide hands-on clinical care across a diverse patient population while developing expertise in respiratory care procedures, equipment, patient assessment, emergency response, and cardiopulmonary support. The Respiratory Therapist plays an important role in patient safety, comfort, and outcomes through timely assessment, treatment, communication, and documentation.
The Respiratory Therapist Will
- Perform a variety of respiratory care procedures for patients across a range of ages, including infants and adults, within the scope of responsibility.
- Operate, maintain, and monitor respiratory care equipment and ensure equipment is used safely and appropriately.
- Obtain arterial blood gas samples, perform EKG tracings, and assist with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other emergency responses as needed.
- Assess patients and determine the appropriateness of respiratory therapies, taking corrective action and escalating concerns when necessary.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation of patient assessments, therapies, and required orders.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, nurses, physicians, fellow respiratory therapists, students, and other healthcare professionals to support positive patient outcomes.
- Prioritize respiratory care procedures based on patient acuity, departmental priorities, and clinical judgment while responding promptly to emergency and STAT requests.
- Support a collaborative learning environment by sharing knowledge, participating in continuing education, and assisting colleagues with clinical decision-making and respiratory care procedures.

Required Skills
- Current Massachusetts Limited License in Respiratory Care required.
- Demonstrated knowledge and competency in respiratory care procedures within the scope of responsibility.
- Knowledge of respiratory care equipment, anatomy and physiology, gas laws, acid-base balance, basic pulmonary disease, pharmacology, safety, and infection control.
- Ability to assess patients, prioritize respiratory care needs, respond to emergency situations, and communicate effectively with the healthcare team.
- Ability to maintain accurate and complete patient documentation.

Compensation
Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.
