About The Role

At a Glance: Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Audio Video Division in Fairfield, NJ.

This position is responsible for the design, development, validation, and transition to production of innovative mechanical products across the Integrated Legrand AV Connected Platforms and Ecosystems Group, including Middle Atlantic Products (MAP), Vaddio, C2G, and On-Q products. The Mechanical Design Engineer develops technical furniture, equipment racks, enclosures, mounts, connectivity accessories, cable management systems, structured wiring solutions, and other technology infrastructure products supporting commercial audiovisual, unified communications, and residential technology markets. Working collaboratively with cross-functional teams and manufacturing partners, this role delivers high-quality, aesthetically integrated, manufacturable, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible products through the application of sound engineering principles and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly practices throughout the product lifecycle. This role also partners closely with manufacturing facilities to support design feasibility, production readiness, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement, ensuring product designs can be effectively transitioned into scalable, repeatable, and cost-effective manufacturing processes.

What Will You Do?

  • Design, develop, validate, and support the commercialization of innovative product solutions across the MAP, Vaddio, C2G, and On-Q portfolios, including mechanical, electromechanical, and technology infrastructure products. Product categories include technical furniture, AV racks, enclosures, mounts, camera support systems, connectivity products, cable management solutions, structured wiring systems, power distribution products, and related commercial and residential technology solutions.
  • Create innovative designs for technical furniture, AV racks, enclosures, mounts, camera mounting systems, connectivity accessories, cable management solutions, structured wiring products, and related audiovisual infrastructure solutions.
  • Develop and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications, BOMs, ECOs, and related product documentation.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Sourcing, Quality, Marketing, suppliers, and manufacturing facilities throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Partner with manufacturing facilities to evaluate design feasibility, support production readiness, resolve manufacturing or assembly issues, and implement design improvements that improve quality, manufacturability, efficiency, and cost.
  • Provide engineering support to manufacturing teams during prototyping, pilot builds, production launch, and ongoing production troubleshooting, including root-cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA) principles to optimize quality, manufacturability, reliability, assembly efficiency, and cost.
  • Perform engineering analysis, material selection, tolerance studies, prototyping, testing, and validation to ensure product performance and compliance.
  • Support supplier selection, tooling development, manufacturing implementation, and successful new product introductions.
  • Investigate design, manufacturing, assembly, and field performance issues; conduct root-cause analysis; and implement corrective actions in partnership with manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and supplier teams.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting schedules, cost targets, and business objectives.
  • Drive cost reduction and value engineering initiatives through product redesign, material optimization, component standardization, and manufacturing process improvements.
  • Support CSR and Design for Environment (DfE) initiatives through sustainable materials, waste reduction, recyclability improvements, packaging optimization, and environmental stewardship.
  • Understand workplace hazards and take steps to proactively prevent and report hazards or injuries in the workplace. Cooperate in safety programs, initiatives, and investigations.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a mechanical design engineer in a manufacturing facility(s); or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and engineering software tools. Experience using SolidWorks and/or PTC Creo for 3D modeling, 3D CAD, assemblies, sheet metal design, technical drawings, BOMs, ECOs, and product documentation. Experience with PLM systems preferred.
  • Ability to interpret engineering standards, specifications, test procedures, technical drawings, and manufacturing documentation; strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Strong working knowledge of manufacturing processes and product applications, including sheet metal fabrication, wood product manufacturing, welding, machining, finishing, assembly, injection molding, extrusion, audiovisual equipment integration, connectivity products, cable management systems, and structured cabling solutions, with the ability to apply this knowledge to product design, manufacturability reviews, production support, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience collaborating with manufacturing facilities, production teams, suppliers, and crossfunctional partners to support design transfer, production launch, manufacturing troubleshooting, and product improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to assess manufacturability, assembly methods, material selection, tolerance requirements, production constraints, and cost implications during the design and development process.
  • Experience leading or supporting cost reduction, value engineering, and product redesign initiatives.
  • Knowledge of sustainable product development practices, Design for Environment (DfE) principles, and environmental sustainability objectives.
  • Effective project planning and execution skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. • Strong collaboration, communication, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, accountability, and customer focus.

Preferred Skills

  • Mechanical design engineering experience in a manufacturing environment, including experience supporting design transfer, production launch, manufacturing troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Experience in consumer driven product design
  • DFMEA and FEA experience
  • Experience with SolidWorks
  • Electrical or controls experience
  • Experience working with multiple disciplines, including electrical and mechanical design, layout, manufacturing, external suppliers and service providers
