What you will do

The Software and Controls Engineering Graduate Intern is responsible for supporting design, development, validation, and support of active magnetic bearing (AMB) control system software and firmware. The ideal candidate would be currently enrolled in a graduate program pursuing a master’s degree.

Position Type: 20-40 hours per week | Hybrid | Salem, VA

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and validate new and updated embedded AMB control system software
  • Code, debug, and analyze system performance to ensure reliable operation
  • Integrate software with hardware components and test system functionality
  • Create and maintain technical documentation
  • Support software quality assurance efforts and testing protocols
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Education

  • Required: Pursuing a master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Software Engineering.

Experience & Technical Skills

  • Coursework or project experience in embedded control system software development, including real-time closed-loop control systems
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and Assembly programming, with exposure to microcontrollers, microprocessors, and RTOS environments
  • Experience with hardware-software integration, debugging, and testing techniques
  • Familiarity with embedded software design patterns and communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART)
  • Working knowledge of power management principles and cybersecurity fundamentals
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to investigate root causes and implement effective countermeasures
  • Other Skills: Collaborates well within multidisciplinary teams, takes initiative in problem-solving, and effectively prioritizes competing tasks
  • U.S. citizen or legal right to work in the U.S.

HIRING HOURLY RANGE: $21.00-$32.00 (Hourly rate to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, location and alignment with market data.)
