About The Role

Join UChicago Medicine, as an Advanced Pharmacy Technician, Registry in the Discharge Medication Program within the Pharmacy Department. In this role, you will be responsible for various tasks related to dispensing and delivery of medications for patients discharging home from the hospital. You will gain exposure to inpatient care, outpatient pharmacy, and transitions of care. The Advanced Pharmacy Technician, Registry plays a key role on our Meds2Beds team in order to provide optimal patient care at the time of discharge. UChicago Medicine is dedicated to providing patients with the personal service necessary to ensure that they achieve the most benefit from their medication therapy.

Job Summary

In this role, the Advanced Pharmacy Technician (APT), Registry performs necessary functions to ensure medication access for patients discharging home from the hospital. Other areas of responsibility include assisting with outpatient pharmacy medication inventory, filling prescriptions in the outpatient pharmacy, enrollment of patients into the Meds2Beds service, managing cost and payment associated with take-home medications, identifying opportunities for pharmacist intervention on prescriptions, and communication with the multidisciplinary care team.

Essential Job Functions

  • Fill prescriptions in the outpatient pharmacy
  • Dispense medications in the outpatient pharmacy
  • Transport medications from the outpatient pharmacy to patient bedside, nursing unit, or discharge lounge depending on patient status and inpatient location
  • Coordinate with patients, nursing, patient transportation, public safety, and other team members in the Discharge Lounge
  • Facilitate patient enrollment into the program
  • Coordinate payment for copays or medications not covered by insurance
  • Provide exemplary customer service to all patients
  • Respond to general phone calls from providers and nurses regarding enrolled patients
  • Communicate with patients, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, social workers, case managers, etc. to coordinate discharge medications for patients
  • Document appropriately in patient charts within the electronic medical record
  • Assist with medication inventory/stocking in the outpatient pharmacy
  • Assists in training new employees on the team
  • Perform other duties as requested by management
  • Conduct patient prescription insurance investigation and insurance input into outpatient pharmacy system
  • Process and adjudicate medication claims through insurance

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required
  • Current ( or eligible for) Illinois Pharmacy Technician Licensure
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician License (National Certification)
  • 3 to 5 years of pharmacy technician experience in a retail or hospital pharmacy (exceptional aptitude or knowledge may be considered in lieu of experience)
  • Knowledge of and ability to use computers and a variety of computer programs including word processing, database management, and spreadsheets
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively manage conflicts and resolve problems
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to positively influence collaborative alliances, promote teamwork, and ensure a high degree of internal and external customer satisfaction
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced and changing environment with multiple priorities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or other advanced degree

Position Details

  • Job Type/FTE: Registry (0.2 FTE)
  • Shift: Rotating 8.5 hour shift; typically 10:30am-7:00pm M-F
  • Unit/Department: Outpatient Pharmacy
  • CBA Code: Non-Union

In this role, we anticipate that you will be scheduled to work a rotating shift. Shifts are typically 8.5 hours with shift start times ranging from 7am to 11am and lasting for 8.5 hours. We anticipate that you will be scheduled to work 100% at the Hyde Park campus. The days of the week that you are scheduled will vary by week but are typically M-F.
