OHL Engineer

Location: UK Wide

Working Pattern: Hybrid

Contract: Permanent, Full Time

  • Experience Level: Intermediate Engineer, typically 3–5 years’ experience
  • Voltage Range: 132kV–400kV

Reporting To: Senior / Lead OHL Engineer

Role Overview

United Infrastructure Power T&D is looking for an OHL Engineer to join our growing overhead line team, supporting the delivery of 132kV–400kV projects from feasibility and design through to construction support.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team delivering projects for major UK transmission and distribution network operators, including SSE, SPEN, NGED and National Grid.

This role would suit an engineer with a few years of OHL experience who is looking to develop further within a major EPC environment.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Technical

  • Prepare and check OHL design deliverables including route maps, profile drawings, wire clearance diagrams and tower schedules
  • Carry out sag-tension analysis using PLS-CADD under the supervision of senior engineers
  • Support structural assessments of lattice towers against relevant loading cases
  • Contribute to feasibility studies and option assessments for new-build, reconductoring and refurbishment schemes
  • Prepare outline foundation capacity assessments
  • Support the development of Design Intent Documents, Designers Risk Assessments and Design Quality Plans

Project Delivery

  • Work within multidisciplinary teams to deliver designs to programme and budget
  • Attend and contribute to client design reviews
  • Maintain design deliverables within relevant document control systems
  • Support construction teams during installation and commissioning, including site visits and RFI responses
  • Assist with the preparation of method statements and construction risk assessments

Quality & Safety

  • Work in accordance with the company Quality Management System and project-specific Design Quality Plans
  • Apply safe-by-design principles across all engineering outputs
  • Support Designers Risk Assessments in line with CDM 2015

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Degree in Electrical, Civil or Structural Engineering, or equivalent
  • Around 3+ years’ OHL engineering experience
  • Exposure to transmission or distribution voltage levels of 33kV and above
  • Working knowledge of PLS-CADD or equivalent sag-tension software
  • Familiarity with relevant OHL design standards, including BS EN 50341 and ENA TS 43-8
  • Ability to produce and check engineering drawings and calculations
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable

  • Experience working on OHL projects for UK DNOs or National Grid
  • Exposure to 132kV–400kV schemes
  • Experience working within a CDM-regulated environment
  • Familiarity with Oracle or ProjectWise document management systems
  • Working towards IEng or CEng registration with a relevant professional body such as the IET or ICE
