About The Role

As a Tax Manager in GTBS you will be responsible for Gartner's U.S. indirect tax function, including sales and use tax, property tax, business licensing, audit defense, compliance support and other state and local tax matters, while supporting global indirect tax initiatives as needed.

A successful candidate for this role will embrace a mindset of continuous improvement through leveraging best-in-class processes and technologies to achieve their objectives. They will also foster a spirit of collaboration and professionalism in their interactions with various interdepartmental partners such as Legal, Treasury, Finance, and Commercial colleagues. This individual will also work closely with other internal and external tax professionals on many projects. The ability to multi-task and work on a wide variety of compliance, controversy, and planning projects is key to the success of the position. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must.

What you’ll do

  • Maintain SUT matrix, identifying indirect taxability of all of Gartner’s products/services
  • Review monthly use tax accruals to ensure accurate calculations
  • Oversee exemption certificate collection, validation, and maintenance processes.
  • Provide technical support and assistance with monthly compliance process as needed,
  • Review client and vendor contracts as needed including review of Coupa SUT inquiries for Gartner purchases,
  • Serve as primary point of contact for indirect tax inquiries from customers and internal business partners.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to automate indirect tax processes and improve controls.
  • Partner with Finance Systems and IT teams to enhance tax determination, reporting, and compliance processes.
  • Support ERP and tax engine optimization initiatives.
  • Lead all indirect tax audits and controversy matters from initiation through resolution.
  • Quantify exposures, evaluate risks, negotiate audit findings and recommend resolution strategies.
  • Manage outsourced property tax compliance.
  • Oversee various non-income tax compliance matters (e.g. various business & commerce taxes, NY CRT, Ohio CAT, etc.)
  • Responsible for indirect State aspects of the provision and reporting process, including developing and recommending reserve positions for FAS 5 tax exposures.
  • Advise as to State impact of law changes and changes to the business/operations of the Company.
  • Support indirect tax aspects of acquisitions, integrations, and corporate restructuring activities.
  • Support team in all aspects of the function including project management, idea generation, process improvements and implementation.
  • Learn and develop foreign indirect tax knowledge from global tax colleagues and assist with international compliance, advisory, and process improvement initiatives as opportunities arise.
  • Assist in other assigned special tax projects.

What you’ll need

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field required
  • 5-7 years’ experience in general state/local income, sales/use, and property tax compliance, planning, and controversy;
  • Combination of public accounting and corporate tax experience preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Motivated, high-potential performer, with demonstrated ability to influence and lead
  • Advance proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other data analysis tools.
  • Working knowledge of Oracle Fusion or similar ERP/ EPM
  • Experience with tax technology solutions such as Vertex, Coupa, Oracle Fusion, OneSource Tax Provision and Workday preferred.
  • Proactive, attentive to detail, strong sense of ownership, ability to multi-task and prioritize, and work collaboratively in an outgoing and open environment;
  • Willingness to learn and develop foreign indirect tax knowledge

Gartner believes in fair and equitable pay. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role is 94,000 USD - 134,000 USD. Please note that actual salaries may vary within the range, or be above or below the range, based on factors including, but not limited to, education, training, experience, professional achievement, business need, and location. In addition to base salary, employees will participate in either an annual bonus plan based on company and individual performance, or a role-based, uncapped sales incentive plan.
