About The Role
SUMMARY
This position leads assigned team to provide safe, efficient and effective operation of the collection and transportation of waste and recycling materials using specialized equipment. Assists with supervisory functions providing direction and support for assigned team members.
PAY: $1.50 shift differential on top of regular pay rate

Merit employees are eligible for an acting-in pay differential when they are temporarily assigned additional job duties for the following positions:
- Lead Equipment Operator
- Supervisor
- Manager
Assignment must last a minimum of 45 consecutive days and cannot exceed a maximum duration of 180 days.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Three (3) years of closely related experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Oversees all assigned routes and determines satisfactory completion. Makes adjustments to work assignments to compensate for breakdowns, uncovered routes, or similar issues.
- Monitors workloads and works with supervisor to correct imbalances and make recommendations for improvement.
- Conducts meetings to provide information and discuss issues and potential solutions.
- Assists in training new employees and provides insight on equipment operator’s performance evaluations. Makes recommendations for any needed performance corrections.
- Troubleshoots daily problems working towards problem resolution. Refers unresolved problems to supervisor.
- Drives and operates a variety of refuse collection equipment on residential and city streets and highways to collect waste and recycling generated within the District.
- Loads, compacts, transports, and unloads waste and recycling at designated facilities; understands and follows facility rules and procedures.
- Completes all required pre- and post-shift inspections and ensures equipment is clean and in proper working condition.
- Follows a complicated map; ensures all listed streets are collected and residents receive excellent customer service.
- Manages loads within legal limits and follows all applicable laws and regulations.
- Functions as a member of several teams and works in multiple programs performing a wide variety of activities.
- Ensures that open and complete communication occurs throughout the day to keep team members and other lead operators apprised of progress, problems, and completion of the daily workload.
- Recommends service improvements to provide quality, seamless customer service

Knowledge of
- Effective leadership skills and ability to delegate assignments, establish priorities, and organize projects.
- General operation and preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Daily operation assignments and makes adjustments to fill in for the short falls that occur.
- Laws regarding waste and recycling transportation. All regulations governing CLD operators.
- Working as a team member and identifying strengths and weaknesses.
- Basic computer use.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires a full range of motion in the shoulders, arms, hands, wrists, legs, and feet. Must be able to push, pull or lift up to 100 pounds as necessary to ensure route is complete and free of debris. Must possess manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination. Must drive and sit in uncomfortable positions for extended periods where there is constant exposure to traffic hazards, inclement weather, noise, dust, fumes, grease and unsanitary conditions.
