Our Head of Roads and Building Facilities is on sabbatical for summer, which provides a great opportunity for you!
The Remarkables’ access road and base facilities are integral to our operations, and this role is responsible for our important summer maintenance of these assets.
The ideal candidate will be familiar with our operations and capable of hands-on maintenance and other work. Much of the role is coordinating and overseeing contractors and the ideal candidate will have experience with this type of work – some of which is significant in both scale and value. They will also need to work effectively with summer staff and be a hard-working, motivated self-starter who is organized and disciplined.
This is a great opportunity for a member of the team to step up or sidewards and gain new experience over summer, while making an important contribution to The Remarkables and NZSki.
About the Role
- Carry out general building maintenance and practical handyman work, including minor repairs and routine upkeep across the ski area facilities.
- Complete and coordinate scheduled water and wastewater sampling.
- Monitor tollgate faults and respond when necessary.
- Complete ongoing daily road checks and weekly building checks, follow-up defects, and maintain clear records of actions and outcomes.
- Plan, programme and coordinate contractor-led road and building works, from site access and mobilisation through to quality checks, practical completion and close-out.
- Take a hands-on coordination lead for key projects, including pothole and pavement repairs, the possible reseal of the road from 6km to 9km, drainage and culvert work, rockfall clearing, line marking, unsealed road rebuilding and planned building maintenance.
- Coordinate traffic-management requirements with the relevant contractors and ensure work interfaces safely with road users and other mountain activities.
- Manage contractor performance, work sequencing, site access, health and safety requirements, quality expectations, progress reporting and completion documentation.
- Track project costs and administration, including budgets, purchase orders, invoices, records and any variations requiring approval.
- Support the mountain's environmental work through trapping, pest-control activities and the seasonal replanting programme, including monitoring and ongoing plant care where required.
- Work closely with the Ski Area Manager and Assistant Ski Area Manager, Maintenance team, and other staff to minimise disruption and deliver the summer programme on time and on budget.
- Coordinate annual Building Warrant of Fitness (BWOF) inspections, remedial works and associated contractor activities.
- Recruit and supervise any required staff for summer projects.
About You
- You are practically minded and comfortable balancing project coordination with hands-on maintenance and problem-solving.
- You have experience coordinating contractors, projects or maintenance work, ideally across civil roading, infrastructure, construction or facilities.
- You communicate expectations clearly, build productive contractor relationships and confidently follow up on quality, safety, progress and documentation.
- You bring sound judgement, attention to detail and a calm, solution-focused approach when plans or weather conditions change.
- You are comfortable working independently in a challenging alpine environment and across a variety of tasks.
Skills and Qualifications
- A current, valid full New Zealand driver licence.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate contractors and maintain safe, well-organised worksites.
- Working knowledge of health and safety responsibilities, risk controls and contractor documentation.
- Good administrative and computer skills for budgets, purchase orders, invoices, progress records and reporting.
- A Class 2 licence and W, T and R endorsements would be advantageous, as would practical machinery or plant experience.
- A current Traffic Management Plan (TMP) qualification is not required for this role.
Further Information
- This is a fixed-term position from Monday 19 October 2026 to Friday 16 April 2027.
- The role is based at The Remarkables, Queenstown, and is approximately 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, although some flexibility is required for a weekend tollgate fault phone and occasional snow-clearing or weather-related callouts.
- Applicants must have the legal right to work in New Zealand for the full contract period.
