Function

Job Summary

CF Industries is seeking a highly motivated Turnaround Engineering Intern to support planning, readiness, execution, and continuous improvement activities associated with a major plant turnaround (TAR). The intern will gain hands-on experience supporting engineering, operations, maintenance, reliability, process safety, and capital project activities within a manufacturing environment.

Job Description

Turnaround Planning & Readiness

  • Assist engineering and operations teams with development and tracking of turnaround work scopes.
  • Perform field verification of work packages, equipment tags, drawings, and P&IDs.
  • Participate in readiness reviews, walkdowns, and planning meetings.
  • Support MOC job package reviews and readiness activities.
  • Assist with contractor logistics, procurement tracking, and site preparation.
  • Support development or modification of nitrogen purge and leak testing procedures.
  • Assist with vent-to-flare emissions calculations and contractor training activities.

Turnaround Execution Support

  • Exercise stop-work authority and identify EHS concerns requiring escalation.
  • Provide field support during outage execution and monitor assigned scopes.
  • Conduct visual inspections of heat exchangers, vessels, heaters, and towers.
  • Track equipment closure and pre-commissioning documentation.
  • Support daily turnaround KPI reporting and coordination meetings.
  • Document field changes, lessons learned, and continuous improvement opportunities.

Capital Projects Support

  • Support turnaround-related capital and reliability projects.
  • Track project schedules, scope, and status updates.
  • Assist with equipment selection, vendor communication, installation verification, commissioning, and startup activities.

Process Safety & Reliability

  • Participate in PHA, MOC, and PSSR activities.
  • Support mechanical integrity, inspection, and reliability initiatives.
  • Assist in safety audits, field observations, and equipment performance assessments.

Major Project Tracking Activities

  • Electrical system upgrades
  • Aqua Stripper replacement project
  • Primary Reformer refractory replacement
  • Critical process vent and control valve upgrades
  • Catalyst replacement activities
  • Cooling water system flushing and passivation activities
  • MOC field work and startup approvals

Internship Deliverables

  • Complete turnaround scope field walkdowns.
  • Maintain turnaround readiness action item trackers.
  • Develop at least one turnaround report or dashboard.
  • Assist with work package development and reviews.
  • Participate in planning, execution, and lessons learned meetings.
  • Deliver a final presentation summarizing contributions, safety observations, lessons learned, and recommendations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented industrial environment.
