Instructional Designer

This position leads the design, development, and continuous improvement of learning experiences and student success initiatives for the Student Success Center (SSC) within Continuing Education (CE). The Instructional Designer oversees the creation of high-quality instructional materials, training programs, and academic support resources for student employees (e.g., peer educators, tutors, teaching assistants, academic coaches) and CE learners. The position partners with faculty, staff, and subject matter experts to design engaging, accessible, and evidence-based learning experiences that align with CE's mission, vision, and values.

In addition to leading instructional design projects, the position provides strategic direction, manages project timelines and priorities, and mentors graduate and undergraduate Instructional Design Assistants (IDAs) in developing their instructional design and professional skills. The position ensures instructional materials meet quality, accessibility, copyright, and functionality standards while fostering innovation through effective use of learning technologies and AI-assisted design workflows. This role combines instructional design expertise, project management, leadership, creativity, and technical knowledge to strengthen the team's work and improve learner success across Continuing Education.

What you’ll do in this position

  • Lead the Design and Development of Academic Support Resources

Oversee the design and development of training materials for student employees, including academic coaches, peer educators, teaching assistants, tutors, and other SSC staff ensuring alignment with CE standards and learner needs. In addition, lead the creation of engaging and accessible academic support resources for students enrolled in Continuing Education courses.

  • Manage Projects and Provide Strategic Leadership

Plan and manage design projects from initiation to completion, including creating project maps, assessment plans, and timelines. Provide strategic direction to align projects with CE’s mission, ensuring deliverables are completed on time, within budget, and at a high level of quality. Organize and assemble course content and learning activities in the LMS, ensuring all resources meet copyright, accessibility, and functionality standards.

  • Manage and Develop Team Members

Provide guidance, training, and experiential learning opportunities to graduate and undergraduate Instructional Design Assistants (IDAs), fostering growth in instructional design skills, professional development, and leadership capacity.

  • Implement Best Practices and Foster Innovation

Ensure all instructional materials reflect evidence-based design principles and accessibility standards while incorporating innovative tools and methods that enhance learner engagement and success. Evaluate and appropriately integrate AI-assisted tools and workflows to enhance instructional quality, improve efficiency, and support learner success while adhering to university policies regarding privacy, copyright, accessibility, and responsible use.

  • Identify, evaluate, and implement third-party learning tools and emerging technologies to enhance instructional materials and support continuous improvement in design quality and effectiveness.
  • Collaborate and Coordinate with Stakeholders

Partner with CE staff, instructors, and subject matter experts (SMEs) to align design objectives with institutional goals, communicate project milestones, and ensure transparency and collaboration throughout all phases of development.

What qualifies you for this role

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Proficient with an LMS (Blackboard, Canvas, LearningSuite, etc.)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Zoom, Live Remote technologies.
  • Knowledgeable of live remote instructional design teaching/learning practices.

Associate Instructional Designer (Level 52: $31.50 - $40.75)

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or closely related field
  • One or more years’ full-time direct work experience in the field of course design and production.

Instructional Designer (Level 53: $35.25 - $45.75)

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Master’s degree in Instructional Technology, Instructional Design, or closely related field
  • Three or more years’ work experience in the field of course design and production.

Senior Instructional Designer (Level 54: $39.50 - $51.00)

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or closely related field
  • Seven or more years of full-time direct work experience in the field of course design and production. Or an equivalent combination of a bachelor’s degree in instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or a closely related field, plus nine or more years of full-time direct work experience in the field of course design and production.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Technology (or closely related field).
  • Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Proficient with Articulate Storyline.
  • Familiarity with video production (Final Cut, Adobe Premier/After Effects).
  • Familiarity with workflow applications.
  • Some supervisory and project management experience.

Pay Grade: 53

Typical Starting Pay

52: $31.50 - $40.75

53: $35.25 - $45.75

54: $39.50 - $51.00

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
