About The Role

Performs secretarial, clerical, and receptionist duties in support of an office or school. Performs word processing functions, maintains electronic and paper files, answers telephone calls, and receives office visitors. Performs other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs skilled word processing functions. Produces a variety of documents including correspondence, memoranda, reports, announcements, and forms from handwritten copies, verbal instructions, and notes. Creates documents for mass mailings .
  • Receives, distributes, and files documents. Maintains electronic databases, spreadsheets, and logs. Enters and retrieves information from databases. Organizes and maintains electronic and paper document filing systems.
  • Answers and routes telephone calls. Takes and forwards messages to office staff. Provides routine information to callers regarding office programs, services, and procedures. Assists callers in completing forms and applications.
  • Receives and directs office visitors. Receives, opens, sorts, and distributes incoming inter-office and U.S. mail. Photocopies, assembles, and distributes documents.
  • Operates personal computers, printers, fax machines, and related office equipment. Sends and receives e-mail messages. Accesses electronic calendars.
  • Maintains an inventory of office supplies, forms, documents, and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience

  • Possession of a high school diploma or appropriate equivalent. Two years of office secretarial and/or clerical experience.
  • Candidates will complete the BCPS Office Professional Skills Assessment relevant to this position.

  • Knowledge of office practices and procedures. Knowledge of filing systems. Knowledge of spelling, grammar, and arithmetic. Knowledge of personal computers and office software packages. Knowledge of automated office systems.

  • Ability to compose simple letters and memos.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The work of this class is generally sedentary and performed in an office environment. Work includes the operation of office equipment, including personal computers, and occasional limited physical activities.

Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

May be required to work additional hours with little or no notice.

SALARY: Grade 01/ESPBC, $22.15-$40.21 (Hourly Base Pay Scale for Non-Exempt Office Professionals, Clerical and Classified Employees Represented by ESPBC, Effective July 1, 2026.

FLSA: Exempt

RETIREMENT: Eligible for the Maryland State Retirement System

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • All people employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (per COMAR) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $109.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
  • If you have military experience, you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
  • Official transcripts will be required upon hire and must be sent via Escript/clearinghouse from your university.
  • Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination.
  • All newly hired personnel must attend a Benefits and Retirement Orientation meeting.
  • Additional job verification will be required for salary credit.
