Job Summary

The Powergrids Development Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and qualification of energy cables for the Wrexham plant. This role focuses on the end-to-end R&D process, including material selection, product approvals, and sample testing to ensure designs are cost-effective, sustainable, and compliant with customer specifications.

Outline of Main Responsibilities

  • Responsible for design, development and testing of energy cables for the Power grid business manufactured at Wrexham to be both cost effective and fully meet the specification and customer requirements.
  • Management of the design, development, and qualification processes through the Accolade project management system.
  • Provide technical support to customer enquiries and contracts.
  • Active involvement in the management of product design changes.
  • Responsibility for product cost reduction (DTC), approval of alternative materials and preparation of associated raw material specifications.
  • Responsible for Technical Instructions within Wrexham plant.
  • Manage the planning and execution of sample testing for R&D and product qualification
  • Evaluate and introduce sustainable materials and alternative suppliers to reduce the environmental footprint of cable designs
  • Technical liaison with external suppliers of raw materials for identifying and co-ordinating new projects to meet business needs.
  • Provide regular updates to the R&D UK director on tasks and projects including presentations.
  • Support to the Quality function during external third party process and product audits.

Qualifications

  • Educated preferably up to degree level or similar in a relevant Engineering subject.
  • A high degree of numeracy, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate problem solving skills, tenacity and capability to work independently on projects or as part of a team.
  • Product knowledge including materials and cable manufacturing processes would be advantageous, but suitable training will be provided.
  • IT skills in MS Office necessary. Experience with SAP would be advantageous but suitable training will be provided.
  • Applicants should be customer and service focused and able to communicate at all levels, with both technical and non-technical people.
