Summary of Job Duties

Works under the general supervision of the Chief of Police and the direct supervision of the Sergeant. Responsible for enforcement of traffic control, criminal laws, and parking regulations. This position is governed by the Law Enforcement Standards of Arkansas and UAMS Policies.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED required.
  • Be certified by the Arkansas Law Enforcement Standards Training Academy as a Police Officer or become certified within one (1) year of employment. (Possibility of a one-year extension).
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Current and valid Arkansas driver’s license.
  • Ability to communicate and maintain a good rapport with the campus population.
  • Engages in and maintains control of situations/persons through use of minimal force needed in required situations.
  • Able to pass a medical physical examination.
  • Able to pass a psychological examination.
  • Ability to walk 8 to 12 miles in an 8-to-12-hour shift.
  • Ability to climb stairwells.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates degree or higher.
  • Basic knowledge of computers.
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Office software.

Critical Competencies and Skills

  • Knowledge of law enforcement practices, methods, and techniques
  • Knowledge of traffic and criminal laws, and departmental regulations and procedures
  • Maintains control of persons by use of minimal force needed in required situations
  • Skill in the operations of fire arms
  • Possesses basic computer skills with a general knowledge of Microsoft Office software
  • Ability to properly prepare and write police reports
  • Communicates and maintains a good rapport with the campus population
  • Practices appropriate enforcement of parking regulations
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles used in work activities

  • Exercises good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions
  • Responds quickly to emergency situations and calls for service without unnecessarily jeopardizing the safety of oneself, other members of the police department or the public
  • Utilizes common-sense understanding in order to execute written, oral or diagrammed instructions
  • Proficient in the use of firearms and the operation of police vehicles
  • Observes situations objectively and analytically, record and report them clearly and concisely both orally in writing
  • Ability and willingness to perform moderately physical work
  • Ability and willingness to perform work indoors, outdoors and in a vehicle
  • Exhibits good character (i.e. courteous, friendly and empathetic) as determined by a detailed background investigation
  • Attends related training classes and schools as needed
  • UAMS is a very diverse campus therefore officers must be at ease with members of other ethnic, cultural, and social groups
  • May perform other duties as assigned by superior officers or administration

Physical Requirements

  • Heavy Work | Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The e mployee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; and/or visual inspection at distances close to the eyes.
  • The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work)
  • The employee is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
