About The Role
We’re looking for a Senior Roadway Engineer to join our growing Canadian Operations. This position will be based in our Whitby office , with opportunities for candidates located in Mississauga, Toronto, Markham, Waterloo , St. Catharines, or Ottawa. . The successful candidate will report to the Lead Engineer and Team Leader of the Roads and Highways Team within the Design Delivery Organization (DDO) .
To be successful in this role, you will have a minimum of 10 years of experience in transportation engineering, design, and design coordination on transportation infrastructure projects including highways, roads, transit facilities, and multimodal transportation corridors. You will be responsible for leading roadway engineering assignments, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, mentoring junior staff, and supporting project delivery across Ontario. You will work closely with regional technical leaders, project managers, designers, and multidisciplinary teams across Ontario, Canada, North America, and GHD’s global network.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in
- Leading transportation engineering and roadway design assignments for highways, freeways, arterial roads, municipal roads, transit corridors, and other transportation infrastructure projects.
- Leading the planning, development, and delivery of transportation engineering designs from concept development through detailed design.
- Coordinating multidisciplinary project teams and providing technical leadership throughout project development and delivery.
- Providing mentorship, technical guidance, and supervision to engineers, engineers-in-training, technicians, and designers.
- Reviewing and overseeing the preparation of engineering plans, profiles, cross-sections, quantities, technical memoranda, specifications, and contract documents.
- Leading design coordination activities and ensuring compliance with applicable standards, client requirements, and project objectives.
- Working collaboratively with civil, structural, drainage, geotechnical, environmental, electrical, traffic, and other engineering disciplines to deliver coordinated project solutions.
- Supporting project managers with project planning, scope development, schedule management, resource planning, and budget monitoring.
- Supporting Design Managers and Project Managers in the planning, execution, and delivery of transportation infrastructure projects, including scope management, schedule development, resource planning, and budget monitoring.
- Leading design coordination efforts across multidisciplinary teams while developing the skills and experience required for future Design Manager or Project Manager responsibilities.
- Participating in client engagement, proposal development, project pursuits, fee preparation, and business development activities.
- Contributing to project delivery strategy, risk management, staffing plans, and project governance activities to broaden exposure to project management functions.
- Maintaining effective working relationships with clients, municipalities, transportation agencies, utility companies, contractors, and subconsultants.
- Supporting the preparation and review of reports, technical studies, design submissions, and contract documentation for review agencies and clients.
- Supporting projects delivered through procurement models such as Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build.
- Ensuring that project deliverables meet established quality standards, design criteria, schedules, and budget requirements.
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives related to transportation engineering standards, best practices, technical workflows, training, and lessons learned.
- Contributing to the growth and development of the Roads and Highways Team and supporting career development opportunities for junior staff.
- Identifying opportunities for technical excellence, innovation, and improved project delivery across transportation infrastructure projects.
- Various opportunities for continued career development in Design Management, Project Management, Technical Leadership, and Team Leadership roles within GHD's Transportation business.
What you will bring to the team
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario.
- 10+ years contributing to the design, coordination, and delivery of transportation infrastructure projects.
- Strong technical leadership in roadway, highway, freeway, municipal roadway, or transportation infrastructure design.
- Proven ability to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and mentor technical staff.
- Expertise in preparing and reviewing engineering drawings, technical reports, specifications, contract documents, and design submissions.
- Strong understanding of transportation engineering principles, roadway geometric design, roadside safety requirements, TAC guidance, OPSS standards, and MTO requirements.
- Knowledge of project delivery processes, resource planning, scheduling, budgeting, and execution strategies.
- Strong quality management skills, including design reviews, quality assurance, and quality control processes.
- Excellent communication, leadership, stakeholder engagement, and organizational skills.
- Ability to lead multiple projects and work effectively within a collaborative team environment.
Preferred
- Familiarity delivering transportation projects for MTO, Metrolinx, municipalities, regional governments, or other transportation agencies.
- Knowledge of Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, and alternative delivery models.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, OpenRoads Designer, or comparable transportation design platforms.
- Familiarity with BIM collaboration environments such as ProjectWise or Autodesk Construction Cloud.
- Knowledge of contract preparation software including CPS, HiCo, or Builterra.
- Exposure to major transportation projects involving highways, freeways, municipal roadways, transit systems, LRT, BRT, and multimodal corridors.
The salary range for this position is $102,381 - $152,381. The posted salary range represents the expected hiring range for GHD locations in its major city centres. Ranges may vary for positions in other locations. At GHD, base salary is determined by your skills, experience, qualifications and work location.
